Romans 14:4-6

A Study of The Book of Romans

Lesson 99 Chapter 14:1 – 15:13

“The Believers relationship one toward another.” - Part 2 13:4 – 6

By Pastor Randy Johnson

  1. Verse 4 “Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.”
    1. “Who art thou that judgest another man's servant…” If we tend to mind another mans business then we are called a “busybody” and that is forbidden by the Lord. 1 Peter 4:15 “But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.”

a. To judge another is also not permitted by the Lord. If one is sinning then that is something you may speak to one about but just to sit in judgment of other Christians is not permitted by the Lord. Luke 6:37 “Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:”

b. A churches judgment of others is ok but for disciplinary reasons. A church should never sit in judgment of her membership unless it is to judge sinful acts. James 4:12 “There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?”

c. 1 Corinthians 4:4 - 5 “For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord. (5.) Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.”

d. I know that some Christians thinks that it is their God given right to stand in judgment of everyone else but it is not, in fact maybe it would do those people good to look in a mirror and judge their own lives.

    1. “…to his own master he standeth or falleth.” God will be our judge and to
Him we shall stand in judgment.

a. A servant is responsible to his master only not to other men, We belong to God and to Him we shall answer.

b. He can make us stand or fall, and He is the only one that can.

c. All Christians are accountable to God, we are not accountable to other Christians.

    1. “…for God is able to make him stand.” – This has a twofold meaning:

a. The first is it demonstrate the Omnipotence and Sovereignty of God over us,

b. Second, It makes His servant able to stand. None of us, no matter how great one is can stand without Gods strength. Philippians 1:6 “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”

  1. Verse 5 “One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.”
    1. This deals with holy days, is one more important than another and what should we do.

a. Some of the Jewish believers may feel guilty for not worshiping on the Jewish Sabbath as a Christian Gentile would feel guilty not worshipping on Sunday, however isn’t everyday the Lords Day? We worship on Sunday because it is the day Christ rose from the dead but we truly should worship the Lord everyday.

b. Holy days could include what we know as holidays such as Christmas, Easter, or etc. But the question must be asked are these days more holy than any other day? No! These are pagan holidays but none the less they are not special days.

c. Should a Christian be part of these holy days? No but if he does it is not going to send him to hell. If a Christian desires to take part in these days then they will answer only to God for it, just as these Jewish Christians would in the Jewish holy days.

d. The church and the Christian is not about holy days, we are about the gospel of Christ, we are about seeing the lost brought to Christ, we are about church membership growing, and we are about the membership growing in doctrine.

e. Holy days are nothing and truly should not take up our time. Colossians 2:16 - 17 “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: (17.) Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.”

    1. “…Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.”

a. Every Christian must determine what is right or wrong on these holydays. It is not for other Christians to set in judgment of them.

b. The church has much to worry about with getting the gospel to the world and expanding the memberships mind in Gods word.

c. I am not recommending a church member celebrate these days but I also do not stand in judgment of one that does. However as a church we will not and we do not recognize them as Christian holydays, but rather pagan and secular holidays.

d. This is the bottom line, be fully persuaded what it is that God will have you to do.

  1. Verse 6 “He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.”
    1. This carries the same meaning as verse 5, except it deals with food.
    2. “He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord…” Sunday worship is for Christians to worship the Lord. It is not for the non-believers to worship and if they do not want to then so be it. We as Christians are not to force our “religion: on the world. Sunday is a Christian holyday to worship God as a church for the individual Christian everyday is a holy day.

a. But the Lord does require that if you worship on Sunday or any day worship to the Lord.

    1. “…He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.”

a. This deals with the food those that eat meat, eat, but give God the thanks for what you eat.

b. The food has nothing to do with serving God, Jesus Christ does. 1 Corinthians 8:8 “But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.”

c. What ever the Christian does do it to God and give thanks in everything. There are a lot of things Christians attempt to mind that we do not need to be minding. We need to focus on God and Jesus Christ who died for our sins.
