Especially beware of light reading!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Horatius Bonar, "Follow the Lamb" 1861)

"They are more desirable than gold--yes, than much fine gold! Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them Your servant is warned. In keeping them there is great reward!" Psalm 19:10-11
The Christian has discovered one book truer and more precious than all the rest together. Let the Bible be to us the book of books--the one book in all the world whose every verse is wisdom. In studying it, be sure to take it for what it really is--the revelation of the thoughts of God, given us in the words of God. Knowing that we have divine thoughts embodied in divine words--we sit down to the study of the heavenly volume, assured that we shall find the perfection of wisdom in all of its teachings.

Let us read and re-read the Scriptures--meditating on them day and night.
They never grow old, they never lose their sap, they never run dry.

Though it is right and profitable to read other books, if they are true and good--yet beware of reading too many. Do not let man's book thrust God's book into a corner! Do not let commentaries smother the text--nor let the good, shut out the best.

Especially beware of light reading! Shun novels--they are the literary curse of the age! If you are a parent--keep novels out of the way of your children. Neither read them yourself, nor set an example of novel-reading to others. Do not let novels lie on your table, or be seen in your hand. The reading of the light novels of the day, has done deep injury to many:
  vitiating their taste,
  enervating their minds,
unfitting them for life's plain work,
eating out their love for the Bible,
teaching them a false morality, and
creating in the soul an unreal standard of truth, and beauty, and love.

Do not be too fond of the newspaper. Extract matter for thought and prayer out of all that you read.

Let your reading be always select--and whatever you read, begin with seeking God's blessing on it.

But see that your relish for the Bible is above every other enjoyment. The moment you begin to feel greater relish for any other book--lay it down until you have sought deliverance from such a snare, and obtained from the Holy Spirit a more intense relish, and a keener appetite for the Word of God!

"Your words were found, and I ate them. And Your Word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart!" Jeremiah 15:16

And not only [so], but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. (Romans 5:3-5)
We are promised that our sufferings will bear a fruit greater than the power of the suffering: we are promised genuine hope that does not disappoint! What glorious fruit! So then is suffering counted by Paul a reason for rejoicing!

Morning Devotional May 30, 2017

Genesis 1:28
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

In this verse we see God's first blessings and commandments to the first husband and wife. Notice the blessing and the commandments come together. Another words the blessings are the commandments and the commandments are the blessings.
Also notice the blessings and the commandments are not to just one or the other. The blessings and the commandments are for both husband and wife. God addresses all this to “them”. If we will read this in it's context we also see this all happens in the sixth day of creation before the fall of man.
So, as husbands and wives our first duty is to have children. Now, I realize and God knows there are those who are barren and can't have children and there are those who marry past the age of child baring for whatever reason. But those circumstances do not excuse from our duty to love and cherish our spouse. That husband is to still love His wife as Christ loves the church and that wife is to still be in subjection to her husband. That husband is still the head of their home and that wife is to still give honor to her husband.
As children of God and as husband and wife we have duties to God and to each other and if we have children, to them also. Now after the fall in the Garden of Eden, God removed man of his duties there and gave him other duties. But God never took away the duties a husband and wife have to each other. Men, we are to love our wife as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it. Wife you are to “submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” Those things have not changed from Genesis chapter 1 until now. And will not change until we leave this life.
Are there exceptions? Yes. There can be a breaking of the covenant between a husband and wife. God gives provision for this in His Word. We will not discuss this in this series but possibly at a later time when the Lord permits.
So, above all things for a husband and wife, love the Lord thy God above all. That love for God must be and can be seen in our marriages by how we are blessed by God and by how we follow His commandments on marriage and by following these commandments He will continue to bless us.

Praise ye the Lord!!!

The hell of Hell!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Thomas Brooks, "The Golden Key to Open Hidden Treasures")

And as there are a diversity of torments in Hell--so the torments of Hell are everlasting.

"Depart from Me, you who are cursed--into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels!" Matthew 25:41
The sentence which shall be passed upon them--is eternal.
God Himself, who damns them--is eternal.

The prison and chains which hold them--are eternal.

The worm which gnaws them--is eternal.

The fire which torments them--is eternal.

Grievous is the torment of the damned--for the bitterness of the punishments.
It is more grievous--for the diversity of the punishments.
But it is most grievous--for the eternity of the punishments!

If, after so many millions of years as there are drops in the ocean, there might be a deliverance out of Hell--this would yield a little ease, a little comfort to the damned. But oh, but this word, 'Eternity! Eternity! Eternity!'--this word, 'Everlasting! Everlasting! Everlasting!'--this word, 'Forever! Forever! Forever!'--will break the hearts of the damned into ten thousand pieces!

Suppose that the whole world were turned into a mountain of sand, and that a little bird would come once every thousand years and carry away one grain of sand from that heap. What an infinite number of years would be spent before this great mountain of sand would be fetched away! Just so--if a man should lie in everlasting burnings so long a time as this, and then have an end of his woe--it would give him some ease, some hope, and some comfort.

But when that immortal bird shall have carried away this great mountain of sand--a thousand times over and over--alas, alas, sinful man shall be as far from the end of his anguish and torment as ever he was! He shall be no nearer coming out of Hell--than he was the very first moment that he entered into Hell!

Suppose, say others, that a man were to endure the torments of Hell for as many years as there are . . .
  sands on the sea-shore,
drops of water in the sea,
  stars in the heavens,
  leaves on the trees,
blades of grass on the ground
--then he would comfort himself with this poor thought, "Well, there will come a day when my misery and torment shall have an end."

But woe and alas! this word, "Forever! Forever! Forever!" will fill the hearts of the damned with the greatest . . .
  horror and terror,
  anger and rage,
  bewilderment and astonishment!

If the fire of Hell were terminable--then it might be tolerable.
But being endless--it must needs be easeless, and remediless.

The eternity of Hell--is the hell of Hell.

The damned shall live as long in Hell--as long as God Himself shall live in Heaven!

"The reprobate shall have . . .
  punishment--without pity,
  misery--without mercy,
  sorrow--without support,
  crying--without compassion,
  mischief--without measure,
  and torment--without end!"

"And they will go away into eternal punishment--but the righteous into eternal life." Matthew 25:46

All the pains, torments, curse, and wrath which were due to the elect--fell on Christ, until divine justice was fully satisfied! "For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath--but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Thessalonians 5:9

Oh, exalt that Christ! Oh, extol that Savior--who has saved you from that eternal wrath!

Daily Promises

Blue Letter Bible
May 30, 2017
Blessed [is] the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. (James 1:12)
The crown of life is a promise that God grants to those who love Him. Though we endure tremendous trials and tribulations, we will not be crushed. Our suffering will end in the glory of Jesus Christ and we will receive the crown of life. What a beautiful ending for this life! May God be glorified in our daily trials. May we seek His face and continue to be molded into His perfect image.

Sweeter morsels both for worms and devils!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Christopher Love, "Hell's Terror!" 1618-1651)

"Every living thing that moved on the earth perished--birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind!" Genesis 7:21

"Then the Lord rained down fire and burning sulfur from the sky on Sodom and Gomorrah. He utterly destroyed them, along with the other cities and villages of the plain--wiping out all the people and every bit of vegetation!" Genesis 19:24-25
"God did not spare angels when they sinned--but sent them to Hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment!" 2 Peter 2:4

Contemplating the doctrine of Hell, will give a check to many sins of the ungodly.

The destruction of the old world in the universal deluge,
the raining down of fire and burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah,
the damnation of the rebellious angels--
are all examples to the ungodly, to take heed of sinning.

There is nothing in the world which will more check the thoughts of lust--than thoughts of the fire of Hell. If you burn in your lusts on earth--then you will burn in fire in Hell.

Contemplating the doctrine of Hell, will give a check to the sin of gluttony. For the more you pamper your flesh, if you are wicked--you make yourselves but sweeter morsels both for worms and devils! Take heed of gluttony and pampering your flesh!

Contemplating the doctrine of Hell, will give a check to the sin of pride. Paul bids Timothy to take heed of pride--lest he fall into the condemnation of the devils. That is, lest Timothy fall into the sin for which the devils were damned. The devils were cast into chains of darkness only for the sin of pride--therefore take heed of pride! It may bring you to Hell--as well as the devils! Pride cast them into Hell--so it may do to you!

A Thought From our Pastor:
Proof God Only Teaches Truth.Luke 9:44-45 “Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men…But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.”

This passage of scripture is an eye opening scripture. We have to sometimes wonder why men who study the same bible, sometimes in the same churches, simply cannot agree on the scriptures. I believe by this passage of scripture it is because God gives us the understanding that only He wants us to understand. There is a great difference between a Christian who knows bible truth and refuses to teach it than one who simply cannot understand it. I believe it is impossible for a Believer to extend beyond the limits that God has allowed them to have. “But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.” 2 Corinthians 10:13 I believe doctrinal truth is elected just as salvation is, it is by God’s grace and giving love. We never have a reason to boast about our knowledge or understanding of the scriptures, likewise a believer with understanding should not criticize another one for their lack. Jesus told these wonderful dedicated servants that His death was soon and they understood not, why not, “…it was hid from them, that they perceived it not…” God did not bless them with that knowledge. I always wondered why these men did not attend the crucifixion of Jesus. If they understood (while it may have been painful) they would have gloried in His death. We do, as sad as it is to visit the scriptures on the crucifixion we understand how glorious His death was. And then the tomb, why were they not there on the resurrection morning? Jesus had just told these men that He was going to Jerusalem to die and God did not give them the knowledge to understand. These men who lived, slept, eat, preached, and suffered with Jesus, these men who followed Him at any cost, these men who heard Him preach, saw Him heal, and loved Him more than life, understood not. Why not? Because God did not show it to them. Beloved, please understand we only get what God gives us in every area of life. Two great Ministers, two great writes of commentaries, two men that had great knowledge of the scriptures, but neither John Gill nor Charles Haddon Spurgeon understood the truth about the church, neither where Baptist, why not? And not just them but millions of others never understood select truths about the scriptures, why not? We study the same bible, from like-minded pastors and teachers, why is it some get it and some do not? I believe because if God does not show and teach it to us it is impossible to understand. Paul wrote in Ephesians 4:6-7 “One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all…But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.” We all serve one single God, who is above all, but only gives each of us the measure of grace He has given us in Christ. I believe we cannot surpass this measure of knowledge no more than we can pass our bounds of life. If one person lives to be 90 and another lives 2 years it was God who ordained it, just like He limits our understanding. Therefore, beloved, let us not be so hard on those who do not understand, if they are saved and have little knowledge of the scriptures and you have a lot, thank God for what He has blessed you with and pray for those that is without. I believe some believers are simply too hard on others that disagree with them. If two people are saved then that have a great fellowship in Christ, why fight and dislike over doctrine. Just think about it!!

From One Preacher to AnotherBy Don Fortner
“He that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.” (Proverbs 12:15)

In another place the Spirit of God admonishes us to “Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end” (Pro. 19:20). More than thirty years ago Pastor Henry Mahan and I were preaching together in a Bible conference in Appomattox, VA. I was a very young man, preaching with him and several other men of much age and experience. Each day we were there, Bro. Mahan came by my room for a visit. Each time, he gave me a word of wise counsel about preaching. I can almost recall his exact words. I have rehearsed them countless times over the years. They have, I hope, shaped my preaching.

Bro. Mahan’s first word of wisdom to me was “Preach the Gospel.” He urged me to preach like Richard Baxter, “as a dying man to dying men.” From that day to this, it has been my determination every time I preach to do so with the conscious awareness that I am preaching to eternity bound sinners, who must soon stand before God in judgment. — Let no sermon ever be preached that does not clearly show sinners how God saves sinners by his grace, urging them to seek his mercy in Christ.

Next, my wise counsellor urged me, “Don’t try to preach to preachers. Find a man in the congregation who looks like he may have been digging ditches his whole life, who looks like his heart is broken and heavy, who needs comfort and encouragement.” That is exactly what God himself demands of those who speak for him (Isa. 40:1-2). — Every gospel sermon is a message of consolation to God’s elect, urging them to look away from themselves and their woes to Christ and his fulness of grace.

The third wise word of counsel Bro. Mahan gave me that week was, “Bro. Fortner, find something in that Book that speaks to you, that you need. If you need it and it speaks to you, chances are somebody else will need it and it will speak to them. If you don’t need it, nobody else does.” In other words, it is utter vanity to stand in the pulpit answering questions no one is asking. — Gospel preaching is not defending points of doctrine, but declaring the boundless mercy and grace of God in Christ.

I pray that God will never allow me to forget these words of wise counsel. I think hell must roar with laughter when preachers stand in the pulpit and try to untie theological knots no one is aware of and argue debates no one cares about. Until I find a message more glorious than Christ crucified, more needful than free grace, more delightful than infinite mercy, more comforting than absolute forgiveness, more assuring than perfect righteousness, more compelling than redeeming blood, more hopeful than heavenly glory, and more joyful than the infinite, immutable love of God in Christ, I am determined to preach nothing else, but Jesus Christ and him crucified. — “God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.”

Seeing that we deserve nothing--we should be content with, and thankful for anything!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Ralph Venning, "The Plague of Plagues!" 1669)

It has been every man's lot to come into and go out of this world naked--to show that he has no right to anything, but lives on the alms of God's charity and grace. All that we have or hold between our birth and death--is the mere gift of God.

God might choose whether He would allow us anything or not; and when He has given--He may take back again, and none of us has cause to say anything but what Job said: "Naked I came into the world--and naked I shall return. The Lord has given--and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord!" Job 1:21

All that we have, our food and clothing and belongings--are only lent to us. Therefore, seeing that we deserve nothing--we should be content with, and thankful for anything.

"For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that." 1 Timothy 6:7-8

The LORD [is] good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. (Nahum 1:7)
Not only is the Lord an unbreachable defence to those who find their identity and righteousness in Christ, but He knows intimately each whom He defends. He is aware of our every need and every weakness, and thus, we, His people, can be supremely confident in His ability to bolster us in the face of even the fiercest enemy. Rejoice, O believer, for He is our great shield and high wall of bastion!

Morning Devotional May 28, 2017

Genesis 2:24
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

Here is another verse concerning the first marriage and as well as all other marriages afterwards. While living in the home of our parents we are under their authority. But the moment we marry, that all changes. We are no longer under our parents. We now belong to our spouse. Now, we are told to honor our father and mother. But once we marry we are to no longer to be under their authority. We have a home of our own to be concerned with. As husbands we have a wife to love, cherish, and yes, even lead. As the wife she is commanded to come under the authority of her husband. Not another man. Not even her father. But only her husband.
But back to the verse above. The man is to cleave to his wife. No one else. And especially his parents. Once the marriage has been consummated they are one flesh. They are to think, act and be one. Men, our wives are to be our best friend and we are to have a desire to spend every waking moment with her and wanting to please her in every way possible. Ladies, you are to be the same with your husband. As husband and wife we have mutual duties to each other and our home. But not just that, we also have mutual duties to the Lord to be these things to each other. To follow His Word in all things concerning marriage. Men are to love their wife as Christ loves His bride the church. Wives are to be in subjection to their own husband as the church is to Christ. This is above all in a marriage. To follow the example of Christ and His church.
O how many marital problem could be avoided if we would just follow the Lord's example as the husband and the churches example as the wife?
As we go through this study I hope you will see that marriage is talked about as much or maybe more than any topic in God's Word. Like I stated in the last devotional, marriage is the most important institution God has created. Important not to just us as His children but very much important to our Lord and Savior. So important to Him that He commands us to use Himself as the example to follow for our own marriages.
Praise ye the Lord!!!

Morning Devotional May 27, 2017

Genesis 2:18

And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”

This verse is the beginning of God's plan for marriage. God is plain here. “It is not good that the man should be alone.” God's intent was that man have a help meet. A wife.
Lord willing, in the next few devotionals we will discuss what the Word of God has to say about marriage. This will not be an indeepth study. I will save that for another time.
God said “I will make him an help meet for him.” Who made the help meet? Praise God, He did!!! Notice in the next few verses that God brings every animal he created before Adam for Adam to choose as a help meet. Also notice Adam could not find a help meet from all the animals. Adam saw that even the animals had male and female but there was no female Adam. Adam could not pick a help meet for himself. It took God to make and to bring the woman unto the man. O how our society has this so wrong today. Our mate is to be sent to us by the Lord. Going out and “hunting” for a spouse leads to destruction. Internet dating sites are ungodly. Even those that claim to be “Christian” sites. Hanging out at the mall is not the place to find a spouse. Go to the bar? Really?
When it comes time, God will bring our spouse to us. There will be no doubt that they are the one God has for us. But nowhere in God's Word did He tell us to go looking amongst the world to find a spouse. Matter of fact He instructs us not too.
The thing to remember as we go through this study is that marriage is a holy institution. Marriage is so important to our Lord that it was the first organization He instituted. Even before the nation of Israel. Before the Temple. And even before the Church. We also see that marriage is so important to our Lord that He has plans to marry Himself. And if we will notice in His Word, even the Bride of Christ(His Church) is called and given to the Bride-Groom(the Son) by God the Father. We will discuss this more later.
As Adam was given Eve for a help meet by God so are we given our wives by God. Any deviation from this is unbiblical. Any time we go out on our own to find a mate without God's guidance and blessings we will meet with certain destruction and disappointment.
As with everything we do in life, we must seek the Lord in these things. And more importantly in these things, fore marriage is the most important institution to our Lord and it must be to us as well.
I pray we all learn some valuable lessons from this study. Pray for me as I seek God's guidance in teaching and writing on this matter.

Praise ye the Lord!!!

My times are in Your hand!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

("Every Day!" Author unknown, 1872)

"My times are in Your hand!"  Psalm 31:15

Is not this truth a joy to you, my soul?

It would be a sorry thing for me, if my times were in my own hands--and it would afford me little satisfaction, if my times were in an angel's hands. How restful should I be in knowing that my times are in my precious Savior's hands!
He sees the end from the beginning.
He knows how to apportion my sorrows and my joys.
He knows what to give--and what to withhold.
He knows also when to give--and when to take away.

But, alas! how often is my heart mistrustful--how often have I murmured under the trying dispensations of His providence! O my soul, be ashamed and confounded--be humbled in the dust that you should ever call in question the wisdom or kindness of the dealings of Him who so loved you as to give His only Son for your redemption!

Help me, O God of my salvation, henceforth, with childlike confidence and peaceful trust--to yield all to You, and to rejoice in the assurance that "My times are in Your hand!"

"My times are in Your hand;
Why should I doubt or fear?
My Father's hand will never cause
 His child a needless tear!"

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. (1 Peter 5:7)
Implicit in Peter's direction to the believer to cast away all cares to the feet of God is the truth that God Himself will care for them. God is powerful! He is sovereign, calling all matters into submission to His will! And He cares for us! If such a powerful God cares for us and our needs, can we fail to cast mastery of our cares and worries into His mighty hands?

That pestilent and most wretched John Wycliffe!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

John Wycliffe was the first to translate the complete Bible into the English language in the 1380's.

John Wycliffe wrote the following:

Holy Scripture is the preeminent authority for every Christian, and the rule of faith.
Forasmuch as the Bible contains all that is necessary for salvation--it is necessary for all men, not for priests alone. It alone is the supreme law that is to rule the Church . . . without human traditions and statutes.
Christ and His Apostles taught the people in the language best known to them. Therefore, the doctrine should not only be in Latin but in the common tongue. The laity ought to understand the faith and, as doctrines of our faith are in the Scriptures, believers should have the Scriptures in a language which they fully understand.

The Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury wrote the following:

"That pestilent and most wretched John Wycliffe, of damnable memory, a child of the old devil, and himself a child or pupil of Antichrist... crowned his wickedness by translating the Scriptures into the mother tongue!"

N.B. The Roman Catholic Council of Constance declared Wycliffe to be a heretic, and decreed that Wycliffe's works should be burned. In 1428, under the direction of Pope Martin V--Wycliffe's corpse was exhumed and burned.

Outer Man Perishing, Inner Man Renewed

Day by Day by Grace
Bob Hoekstra
May 26, 2017

Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. (2 Corinthians 4:16)
Those who learn to live by the grace of God are increasingly protected from discouragement. "Therefore we do not lose heart." This truth was touched upon in an earlier verse from this fourth chapter of 2 Corinthians. "Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do not lose heart" (2 Corinthians 4:1). The protection from discouragement there involved mercy and grace. Since we serve the Lord by mercy and grace (and not by our merit or by our resources), we have a built-in supply of heavenly encouragement available to us daily.
In our present verse, encouragement comes from the contrast between what is happening to the "outward man" and to the "inward man." The "outward man" is the physical person, which can be observed by human sight. This is generally the object of attention among the unredeemed (as well as among believers who are walking according to the flesh). This man is "perishing" because sin has impacted all of us. "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). Man began from dust. "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground" (Genesis 2:7). Due to sin, the outer, physical man is headed back toward that initial starting point. "In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return" (Genesis 3:19). For those who do not know the Lord, this is a discouraging fact. They often strive desperately to prevent this inevitable process.
On the other hand, servants of new covenant grace are not discouraged by this fact. "Therefore we do not lose heart." It is true that our outer man is also perishing. Yet, we see a bigger picture than that. "Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day." As our outer man is deteriorating, we are still encouraged, because our inner man can be in the process of renewal: "And have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him" (Colossians 3:10). As we are humbly seeking the Lord in His word, we are being changed, brought more and more into the newness of Christ: "Beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Corinthians 3:18).
O Lord, as my outer man deteriorates, remind me of the encouraging reality that my inner man can be renewed. Help me to desire inner spiritual progress, rather than outer physical prowess. This I pray through Christ, my Lord, Amen.

Sanctifying grace, as well as pardoning mercy!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

("Every Day!" Author unknown, 1872)

"You shall call His name Jesus--for He shall save His people from their sins!" Matthew 1:21
Jesus! Precious name, how sweet it is! How well it befits Him who bears it--and how glorious is the salvation which He accomplishes!

Misery is the natural consequence of sin. Everything that God enjoins is good--and everything that He forbids is evil. Jesus saves His people from their sins--and so saves them from misery. He died to atone for transgressions. He ever lives to save His people from the power and practice of sin--yes, and eventually from the very presence of sin.

My soul, let your whole trust be in Jesus, not only for deliverance from guilt and its consequences--but from sin in its manifold workings. You are powerless against your inward corruptions--but Jesus is "mighty to save." He can subdue your iniquities. Trust Him then, for sanctifying grace, as well as pardoning mercy!

Dwell much on all He did and suffered for you. In His agony in the garden of Gethsemane, and on the cross at Calvary--see something of the exceeding sinfulness of your sins, from which He died to save you.

"He will subdue our iniquities--and cast all our sins into the depths of the sea!" Micah 7:19
 Jesus' blood, for sinners spilt,
Shows my sin in all its guilt.
Ah, my soul, He bore your load,
You have slain the Lamb of God!

 Farewell, world--your gold is dross!
Now I see the bleeding cross!
Jesus died to set me free,
From the law, and sin, and thee!

He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. (Revelation 21:7)
Echoing the testimony of His promise to the nation of Israel, God speaks thus to the overcoming church: "I will be your God and you will evermore be my people." The Father's love is great. It is a beauty to behold. Ever and beyond the end of days will God's majesty remain; and we, His people shall endure and praise His name forever.

Moral and spiritual parasites!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Frederick Marsh)

There are moral and spiritual parasites which throttle, kill, injure, or retard the growth of the spiritual life!

1. The parasite of sloth will hinder the grace of watchfulness--as it did the five virgins. Matthew 25:5

2. The parasite of worldliness will kill the grace of devotion--as it did in Demas. 2 Timothy 4:10
3. The parasite of pride will devastate the grace of humility--as it did with the Devil. 1 Timothy 3:6

4. The parasite of unbelief will keep down the grace of faith--as is seen in the children of Israel. Hebrews 3:17-19

5. The parasite of self-importance will kill the grace of self-denial--as is stated of Diotrephes. 3 John 9

6. The parasite of avarice will stifle the grace of reality--as is evidenced in Achan. Joshua 7:21
7. The parasite of covetousness will strangle the grace of generosity--as is manifest in Balaam. 2 Peter 2:15

As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem. (Isaiah 66:13)
When the circumstances of life loom fierce and threaten to beat us down—when the seeming futility of our earthly endeavours brings sorrow oppressive, our God will be a comfort to us. He promises consolation. He promises to heal our hearts. He promises us strength in faith. He is our God and He is good!

If this is happiness--then give me misery!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Thomas Sherman, "Divine Breathings; Or, a Pious Soul Thirsting after Christ")
"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen, and lived in luxury every day." Luke 16:19
How apt are many at the sight of a rich worldling--to envy him for what he has.
But, for my part, I rather pity him for what he lacks!
He has money--but he lacks wisdom to use it wisely;
he has a soul--but it lacks grace;
he has the creature--but he lacks the Creator;
he has a mansion--but he lacks Heaven.
In his life, he floats upon a torrent of vanity--which rolls along into an ocean of vexation!
And after death, it will be said of him, "Take this unprofitable servant, bind him hand and foot, and cast him into outer darkness! Consign his soul to the eternal lake of fire and brimstone!"
Where now is the object of your envy?
It is not his gold which can then rescue him,
nor his mansion which can then satisfy him,
nor his friends who can then comfort him.
Therefore, if he is worth the envying--then who can be worth the pitying?
If this is happiness--then give me misery!
Lord, rather make me poor, with a holy heart--than rich, with an evil heart of unbelief!
"Have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue--because I am in agony in this fire!" Luke 16:24
"Then they will go away to eternal punishment--but the righteous to eternal life!" Matthew 25:46

Blue Letter Bible
May 22, 2017
For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. (Galatians 6:8-9)
If we sow the things of the flesh (that is, the things of sin), then we will reap eternal punishment; but if we sow the things of the Spirit (that is, the things of God), then we will reap eternal happiness and joy! As we sow the things of God and cultivate them we must keep pressing on. It may seem that our work is worthless, but in the end, we will reap eternal life with God. For what better harvest could we hope?

A Thought From our Pastor:
Walking In The Spirit.Galatians 5:16 “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

I wonder if we were to examine our walk on this earth could we say we walk in the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit of God has many effects on us. He convicts us of our lost state and brings us to the Christ and causes us to believe. He effects our learning of God’s word, keeps bringing thoughts of the scripture back to us as we struggle in life. He also keeps us saved throughout life not allowing us to fall. But for us, He also prepares us to meet our Saviour Jesus Christ and our heavenly Father. And, not last or least, He will never leave us nor forsake us. What a blessing He is to us who are called the children of God. If it were not for the Holy Spirit, we would all fall right back into sin and become what we were before we were dragged from the flaming fires of Hell. However, with all this being said we must not forget the part of mankind. That’s right we have a part in all of this and that is our Walking in the Spirit. What it means to “Walk in the Spirit” is our everyday life, from our prayer life, to our study of God’s word, to our everyday living on this earth, to our worship of God. How is our everyday life meeting the standards of the Holy Spirit? What are the standards of the Holy Spirit, just read the bible. The bible is the word of God as inspired by the Holy Spirit. It should be the single book of instructions in our life, it should fulfill our everyday life. If it is our everyday instructions in life then it will control our every thought, word, action, and yes our every walk. Every time we fail to walk in the scriptures we fail to walk in the Spirit, we fail God, and we fail ourselves. Paul went on to write “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh…” in other words you cannot serve God and mammon, who are you serving every day? If you walk to please the world than you cannot please God because Paul also wrote “…these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.” If they are “contrary the one to the other” then they can never be served together, ever. Jesus said in Matthew 12:30 “He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.” If you are not serving God, if you are not walking in the Spirit, then whatever you do, you do it against the Lord. Sometimes Christians do not think of the consequences of serving the lust of the flesh, or to walk against the scriptures, but always remember no believer in Jesus Christ should ever go against the God that saved their eternal soul from hell, ever. Beloved, going against God or His word is not an option, we must as Christians guard our everyday life to serve the Lord and to walk in the Spirit. I must admit, in this world it is hard. The world is at war with God and walking in the Spirit takes a lot of energy and humility on our parts, and a lot of grace on God’s part. However, it can be done, and we ought to be ashamed if we fail to give it our best effort. Beloved, there is nothing in this worth the loss we suffer in eternal glory for our failure to do so. Jesus asked this question, “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”  Matthew 16:26 Now while our souls are kept by the Holy Spirit in Jesus Christ, what about our standing before our Father? If we get to heaven and have no rewards, then what have we gained? It will be like a kid watching other kids playing with toys and you have none. Folks, there is nothing in this world, no possession on this earth is worth our eternal standing in Christ. Our everyday walk is ALL impotent to us, let us all walk in the Holy Spirit everyday no matter what.

MARY'S SAVIORBy Curtis Pugh

Probably most of the things believed about Mary the mother of Jesus are based upon imagination rather than upon the Bible. Let us consider one thing about her that is clearly taught by the Bible: once Mary was a lost sinner, but the Lord saved her. We know this because Mary said so herself. She said,  “My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour,” (Luke 1:46-47). It is obvious, is it not? If a person has a savior they must have at one time or another been saved. For instance, if a man falls overboard and is about to drown and another person pulls him back into the boat, the one man was saved from drowning and the other person is his savior.

Mary was the natural child of her parents. Her genealogy is presented through her husband and her father. It goes all the way back to Adam proving that she was a human being and thus as a descendant of that first man was a sinner. She needed a Savior as do all lost sinners.

Every true child of God, that is, every lost sinner who has been born again by the Holy Spirit experiences the same thing that Mary experienced. She and all who know the salvation of the Lord have experienced the rejoicing of the inner man that comes with being born from above. They can all say with Mary, “my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.” Those who do not experience this joy have never been born again!

Every child of God ought to say with Mary, “my soul doth magnify the Lord.” But, alas, there are some who will only share a part of the credit for their salvation with God. They magnify themselves by claiming that they initiated their own salvation. They are like the man overboard who, once rescued, says I sure am glad that I held on tight to you and pulled myself back into the boat with your help – when in reality they were helpless and were pulled in by the other person.

“I came to Christ,” they say, thinking they did it themselves. While Christ said,  “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day,” (John 6:44). They refuse to “magnify the Lord,” but rather attribute at least a part of their salvation to themselves. They did not need to be saved. They only needed a little help. They helped save themselves and so they are a co-savior with Christ, only sharing a part of the glory for their salvation with Him. Their attitude is “we did it.”

There was none of that in Mary's confession! She said, “my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour”! What do you say? “Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” (Psalm 107:8).

Death--to the righteous and the wicked

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(George Lawson, "A Practical Exposition of the Book of Proverbs" 1821)

"The wicked will be cut off from the land--and the unfaithful will be torn from it." Proverbs 2:22

Must not the righteous leave the earth too?
Yes! But the earth is a very different thing to the righteous, and to the wicked.

To the righteous--this world is a place of preparation or Heaven.
To the wicked--this world is all the Heaven they will ever have.

Death is a kind messenger sent to the righteous by their heavenly Father--calling them to the possession of their eternal inheritance!
To the wicked, death is a messenger of wrath--summoning them to the abodes of misery!

Death is the beginning of happiness to God's people.
Death is the final conclusion of all that the wicked counted their happiness.

To the righteous--death is a translation to a glorious eternity!
To the wicked--death is everlasting destruction and woe!

"If only they were wise and would understand this--and discern what their end will be!" Deuteronomy 32:29

"So teach us to number our days--that we may gain a heart of wisdom!" Psalm 90:12

Daily Promises

Blue Letter BibleMay 21, 2017
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. (Matthew 16:27)
Judgment, swift and final, is promised in the last day. Take heart, O believer, that your life is bound up with that of Christ Jesus. His life is your life. His obedience is your obedience. His resurrection is your resurrection. And when He stands to the fore in judgment, rejoice! For you will not stand before Him but alongside Him: holy, righteous, good, and acceptable!

The personal attractions of Jesus!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Octavius Winslow)
"Yes, He is altogether lovely! This is my Beloved--and this is my Friend!" Song of Songs 5:16
The personal attractions of Jesus are all inviting and irresistible!

His love wins us.
His glory charms us.
His beauty attracts us.
His sympathy soothes us.
His gentleness subdues us.
His faithfulness inspires us.

He is the "altogether lovely One!"

Jesus is all that is tender in love.
Jesus is all that is wise in counsel.
Jesus is all that is patient and kind.
Jesus is all that is faithful in friendship.
Jesus is all that is soothing and healing.

The heart of Jesus is ever loving towards His children.
The disposition of Jesus is ever kind towards His children.
The nature of Jesus is ever sympathizing towards His children.

Jesus is your Brother, your Friend, your Redeemer.
As your Brother--He knows the need of His brethren in adversity.
As your Friend--He shows Himself friendly.
As your Redeemer--He has redeemed your soul from sin and Hell.

Jesus has ascended up on high to take possession of Heaven on your behalf, and to prepare a place for you!

Upon His heart, He wears your name as a precious pearl in the priestly breastplate.

"He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them." There is . . .
not a moment of your time,
nor an event of your life,
nor a circumstance of your daily history,
nor a mental or spiritual emotion of yours--
in which you are not borne upon the love, and remembered in the ceaseless intercession of Christ.
"Yes, He is altogether lovely! This is my Beloved--and this is my Friend!" Song of Songs 5:16

Daily Promises

I believe God chose us before the foundation of the Lord, but this is still good.

Daily PromisesBlue Letter Bible
May 20, 2017
Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, (1 Peter 1:2-4)
From the foundation of the world, God foreknew His children and began to sanctify them through the precious blood of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. By the stripes of our Lord, we are given the gift of eternal life with all the joy and peace it could possibly present. By His infinite love and mercy, we are promised an inheritance that will never be lost or destroyed. For those who believe, we have been set apart by this remarkable hope of everlasting life with Christ.

Morning Devotional May 20, 2017

Isaiah 63:7
I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.”

Do we do this? Do God's people mention His lovingkindnesses and His praises that He has bestowed upon us to those around us? Do we even do it in our private prayers to Him?
O what a loving God we serve!!! O how He alone deserves our every praise!!! We look at our land today and we see some of the most ungodly acts that man has ever devised. But God, is still showing mercy on His remnant here. His people are still blessed to live in the most free nation in the world at this time. And yet we are so wicked and vile that we think little of praising our Heavenly Father for this blessing. We have become preoccupied with the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. We have followed after the world and not the Lord!!! What a shame God's own people have become!!!
O child of God, step out of the darkness of this world and back into the light of our Lord and Savior. Forsake the life this old sinful world has to offer and follow the one and only true God. The One we call Father. The One we call Lord and Savior. The only One who shows us everlasting love.
Praise God for His lovingkindnesses!!! Praise Him because all praise and worship is due to Him alone!!!

Praise ye the Lord!!!

The Music of Buried Streams

May 19

By James Ryle

“Be still and know that I am God” (Psalms_46:10)

Travelers tell us that there are rivers flowing beneath the streets of the ancient city of Shechem. During the hours of the day you cannot hear them because of the bustling noise of the narrow streets and the bazaars. But when evening comes and the clamor dies away, and the dew falls on the city, then quite audibly, in the hush of night you may hear the music of the buried streams.

Likewise will our hearts hear the music of God’s voice when we dial down the volume of our hurried and worried lives.

Some hustle to escape a guilty conscience, while others scramble to get away from the burden of shame. Some, out of a sense of duty, overwork themselves in good causes; hoping to assuage an deep, gnawing feeling of never being good enough. All this, and more, constitute the noise of the streets that block us from hearing what God is saying to us.

Yet we must not lose sight of this — the Bible never says to us, “Be busy, and know that I am God.” No. It says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” It is also interesting to note that this verse is couched in the midst of a Psalm flooded with storm, tumult and war!

May you find that moment where all is quiet except for God. And may that moment extend its timeless presence throughout the fabric of your life, such that even in the midst of the raging storm and relentless strife — you may yet know that He is God.

For me!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

"The Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me!" Galatians 2:20
Is Jesus precious to my heart?
Is He the object of my supreme admiration and delight?
Does He have my warmest affection?
Do I love Jesus above all?
I must light the torch of my affection for Christ--at the altar of Calvary. I must go there, and learn and believe what the love of Jesus is to me--the vastness of that love--the self-sacrifice of that love--how that love of Jesus . . .
  labored for me,
  and wept for me,
  and bled for me,
  and suffered for me,
  and died for me!
Can I stand before this love--this love . . .
  so precious,
  so great,
  so enduring,
  so self-consuming,
  so changeless--and know that . . .
His sin-atoning sacrifice was for me,
    His cross was for me,
    His agony was for me,
His scorn and insult was for me,
    His death was for me--
and feel no sensibility, no emotion, no love to Jesus? Impossible!
Do not be cast down, then, in vain regrets that your love to Christ is so frigid, so fickle, so dubious. Go and muse upon the reality and the greatness of the Savior's love to you--and if love can inspire love--while you muse, the fire will burn, and your soul shall be all in flame with love to Jesus!
