Romans 15:8-11

A Study of The Book of Romans

Lesson 106 Chapter 15:1 - 13

“Be Christ Like.” - Part 3 15:8 – 11

By Pastor Randy Johnson

  1. Verse 8 “Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:”
    1. “Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God…”

a. Galatians 4:4 - 5 “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, (5.) To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.”

b. Some versions read “born of a woman” – He was born however He was not simply made of a woman but made of God’s Holy Spirit. Remember the seed the Holy Spirit put in Mary was called “a thing” Luke 1:35 “And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” Until incarnate with the Son of God did it become the Son of God. – The Son of God was not born, Mary is not the mother of God, she is the mother of that thing which is the Son of man.

    1. “…Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision…” This was His office, He was a minister. Matthew 20:28 “Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” – He was born under the law, Jewish law, and He fulfilled every jot and tittle of the law. He came “to minister” that show that He was God and the proof was He was sinless. Therefore the proper reading would be “hath been made” by God through a woman and “made under the law” Gal. 4:4
    2. “…for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:” – This is the answer to the promises of the Saviour promised to the Jewish fathers, God was fulfilling all those promises about a Messiah, and Jesus Christ was that answer.
    3. Luke 24:47 “And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” But not exclusively to the Jews. Spiritual Israel included Gentiles. Remember Abraham was the father of many nations the promises made to him were made to the entire elect of God Jew and Gentile.
  1. Verse 9 “And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.”
    1. The promise of God to the Jews was to send them a Messiah, there was no such promise to the Gentiles. The Gentiles received this promise through grace and mercy. - Just because God loved us. 1 John 4:10 “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” This is Gods eternal love and it was Gods eternal plan to save some Gentiles. – We see this in Psalms 18:49 “Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name.”
    2. “And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy…” However through Christ we become partakers with the Jews. Ephesians 3:6 “That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:”

a. By in-grafting us into the “good olive tree” after breaking off some of the natural branches. Romans 11:17 “And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;” We Gentiles became what the tree was, part of it as though we were natural. Therefore Abraham became our father making him the father of MANY nations.

b. Not by promise but by grace and mercy.

c. All must remember that salvation came to the Gentiles through the Jews, their promise from God of a Messiah, but given to us Gentiles through them. John 4:22 “Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.”

d. Because of this God can have mercy on ALL! Not all mankind but rather all the elect Jew and Gentile. Romans 11:32 “For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.”

    1. “…and sing unto thy name.” – It is this very reason we Gentiles as well as Christian Jews have reason to sing praises unto Gods Holy Name. The more we understand the workings and assembling of all things in Gods elect will the more reason we have to praise God. We Gentiles had no promises from God but look how He has chosen to use us because of grace and mercy!
    2. Because of this thought we are to rejoice with the Christian Jews. Verse 10 “And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people.”
    3. We are not only sing with great joy but also applauded Him for His wonderful love. Verse 11 “And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.” – the word “laud” means – to applaud Him with praise. Not just the Christian Jews but all nations. Psalms 117:1 - 2 “O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. (2.) For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
