Romans 15:12

A Study of The Book of Romans

Lesson 107 Chapter 15:1 - 13

“Be Christ Like.” - Part 3 15:12

By Pastor Randy Johnson

  1. Verse 12 “And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.”
    1. I do not have a total understanding of all that is argued about this verse; however I do want to cover some of it.

a. This scripture comes from Isaiah 11:10 “And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.” – the word “ensign” means - a flag or a signal – which speaks of the height or so all shall see. A flag or banner that all can see and rally around.

b. The Jews believe that the Messiah has not yet come, the Gentiles believes that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. This is a great conflict.

c. The Jews believe that sin killed the kingship of David and therefore it is dead, thus Jesus Christ who is the seed of David could not be the Messiah. Romans 1:3 “Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;”

d. Even if the kingship of David died the Lord promised to resurrect it in the Messiah. Jeremiah 23:5 - 6 "Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. (6.) In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

e. If the Jews are waiting on the Messiah to come from the root of Jessie then they will never know because it is also said that all genealogical records of Israel were destroyed in 70 a.d under Titus. If this is all true (and it is believed that it is) then the Jews will never prove that the future Messiah came from the root of Jessie.

f. Now if the Kingship of David died because of sin then this still does not affect the root of Jessie passing through David and to Jesus Christ. Isaiah 53:2For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.”

g. Also we have Isaiah 11:1 “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:” The stem here refers to a branch growing from a tree stump that has been cut down to the ground. We all have them if we leave the stump in the ground; we have one at our church building right now.

h. There is no doubt Jesus Christ who was of the seed of David and the root of Jessie is the Messiah and He will not only reign over the Gentiles but also the Jews. Psalms 117:1 “O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.”

    1. “…and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.” – There is no doubt; ever; that the Lord had special plans for the Gentiles. And the era we live in today and for the last two thousand years manifest those plans. The Jews may not have and still may not believe it but all they had to do was to read their scriptures. i.e Isaiah 11:10 “…to it shall the Gentiles seek…”

a. To Him do we Gentiles “seek” and in Him do we have “hope”.

b. Matthew 12:21 “And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.”

c. Ephesians 1:12 - 13 "That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. (13.) In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,”
