Romans 15:13-14

A Study of The Book of Romans

Lesson 108 Chapter 15:13 – 14

By Pastor Randy Johnson

  1. Verse 13 “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”
    1. “Now the God of hope…” He (Jesus Christ) is the God of hope, He through time has been called the God of most everything but here He is the God of hope.

a. He is the Gentiles “God of hope” because there is no hope in anything or anyone else. Verse 12 “…he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust (or hope).”

b. Joel 3:16 “The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.”

c. 1 Timothy 1:1 “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;”

d. As Christians; whether Jew or Gentile there is no other hope; just as He is the God of gods He is the God of hope. We can have no other hope just as we can have no other God.

e. Our hope in Christ is not only in this life, but for all eternity. 1 Corinthians 15:19 "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable."

    1. “…fill you with all joy and peace in believing…” The word “fill” means – to cram or to fill to the fullest.

a. With joy and peace. These are two things a believer will never lack if our faith in Jesus Christ – our God of hope – is strong enough, the more faith we have the stronger our faith and peace is in this life.

b. Outside of Christ Jesus – our God of hope – there is no peace and joy. The lost are hopelessly wondering in this world with only vain worldly peace and joy and the weak Christian has little to no peace or joy in this world but only eternal hope after this life. How can any Christian have joy and peace if they do not fully trust in Christ?

c. Isaiah 48:22 “There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked.”

d. Isaiah 26:3-4 "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. (4.) Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:”

    1. “…that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”

a. It is from the God of hope that we may excel in His hope. It is a gift from God, not earned, not learned, and not self generated, it is a gift from God just as everything in a Christian’s life is a gift of Gods grace.

b. Romans 5:4 - 5 "And patience, experience; and experience, hope: (5.) And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us."

c. Ephesians 5:18 - 19 "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; (19.) Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;"

  1. Verse 14 “And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.”
    1. Paul concludes that he believes this church is filled with love, peace, joy, and in these things have much hope and because of this gift of God through the Holy Spirit; that even though they are split on a few things their knowledge of God and these things will keep them together in harmony and unity. They are strong enough in Christ to overcome little differences.

a. Colossians 3:10 “And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:”

b. 2 Peter 1:5-9 "And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; (6.) And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; (7.) And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. (8.) For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (9.) But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins."

    1. “…able also to admonish one another.” Not in anger or hatred but in love just as god for us.

a. Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” – that is with the Joy and peace that God has put in our hearts.

b. Hebrews 10:24 - 25 "And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: (25.) Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."
