This precept is very extensive and important

  ~  ~  ~  ~

(John Newton)

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind . . ." Romans 12:2

This precept is very extensive and important. As believers, we are strangers and pilgrims upon earth. Heaven is our country--and the Lord is our King. We are to be known as His subjects--and therefore it is His pleasure that we do not speak the language or adopt the customs, of the land in which we sojourn.

We must not conform to the spirit of the world. As members of society, we have a part to act in it, in common with others. But though our business is the same--our principles and ends are to be entirely different!

We must not conform to the maxims of the world. The world in various instances calls evil, good--and good, evil. But we have recourse to the law and to the testimony, and are to judge of things by the unerring Word of God--uninfluenced by the determination of the great or the many.

We must not conform to the world in their amusements and diversions. We are to mix with the world, only so far as our necessary and providential connections engage us--so far as we have a reasonable expectation of doing or getting good, and no farther.

"What fellowship has light with darkness, or what concord has Christ with Belial?" What call can a believer have into those places and companies . . .
  where everything tends to promote a spirit of dissipation;
  where the fear of God has no place;
where things are purposely disposed to inflame or indulge corrupt and sinful appetites and passions, and to banish all serious thoughts of God and ourselves?

If it is our duty  . . .
  to redeem time,
  to walk with God,
to do all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
to follow the example which He set for us when He was upon the earth,
and to work out our salvation with fear and trembling
--then it must of course be our duty to avoid a conformity with the world in those vain and sensual diversions, which stand in as direct contradiction to a spiritual frame of mind, as darkness to light.

Colossians 1:16-17 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Luke 6:38  Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

I labor under a complication of disorders!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(John Newton)

I have often detected the two vile abominations--self-will and self-righteousness insinuating themselves into all that I do!

God has mercifully convinced me that I labor under a complication of disorders--summed up in the word, SIN.

He has graciously revealed Himself to me as the infallible Physician--and has enabled me, as such, to commit myself to Him, and to expect my cure from His hand alone.

Yet how often, instead of thankfully accepting His prescriptions--I have foolishly and presumptuously ventured to prescribe to Him, and to point out how I would have Him to deal with me!

How often have I thought that something was necessary for me--which He saw best to deny; and that I could have done better without those dispensations which His wisdom and grace have appointed to work for my good!

Thankfully, He is never weary of me--nor has He left me to my own management!

How inconsistent I am! To acknowledge that I am blind, to entreat Him to lead me--and yet to want to choose my own way, all in the same breath!

Thou [art] my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah. (Psalm 32:7)

The Lord our God is the High King of Deliverance! There is no calamity so great that He might be unable to rescue us. Even when we were dead of spirit and purebred haters of Him, He saw fit to rescue us from ourselves. He gave the dead new life. There is no difficulty so strong that He cannot save us. Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and He will surely deliver!

Rules for Self Knowledge

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(A.W. Tozer)

"For as he thinks within himself, so he is." Proverbs 23:7

Rules for Self Knowledge:
  1. What we want most.
  2. What we think about most.
  3. How we use our money.
  4. What we do with our leisure time.
  5. The company we enjoy.
  6. Who and what we admire.

"Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things!" Colossians 3:1-2

But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find [him], if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul. (Deuteronomy 4:29)

If we seek God, it is promised that we shall find Him. How wondrous then that it is God who makes us to be seekers of Him! In His beautiful supremacy over the history of His redemptive purpose, God has ignited in each of His chosen people, a divine and unquenchable spark of desire to know Him. So rest, O believer, assured in the fact that you love God because He first loved you—and because of His love for you, He will in nowise cast you out!

A Thought From our Pastor:

Listen To The Question, Listen To The Answer.
"And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? (31) And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Acts 16:30-31

The question is an age-old question, and has been asked by every saved sinner, what must I do to be saved? While many ask this question, not too many know the true answer to the question. God has over and over again in His word answered this question and still lost people try to answer it and always get the answer wrong. This is the most important question a person will ask in their life, and the answer must be correct. This is the most important work we as Pastors have, and churches alike. The last thing Jesus told the apostles was to “…Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15 not to a few, not to the local church, not to the community, not even to your state, but to every soul you can find to preach it too. While it is our job or work to feed the sheep, it should also be our greatest passion to get the gospel to every living soul that will listen. There are so many out there who take their gospel to the world, but that is useless. As pastors we must consider this witness to be our most important work. We absolutely cannot allow this question to weaken or get frustrated because that God is not saving as many. We must press forward as though it is as important as it is, because it is. Sinners must hear the truth about salvation. Not everyone who says they are saved, truly are saved. There are so many who have been led down the satanic path of lies, and the results are the same, they are still lost. God says they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. Romans 10:2 People must be made aware that salvation is only in Jesus Christ. The question asked by this jailer was “…what must I do to be saved?” and the answer given by the Apostle Paul and Silas was bold, true, and exact “…Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…” there were no play with words, no trickery, no fancy theology, just the plain and simple truth. Jesus Christ is still the Saviour of mankind and no one can ever see or enter the kingdom of God without going thru Jesus Christ and Him alone. Jesus said in John 5:39-40 “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. (40) And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.” This is exactly what Jesus told Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews in John chapter 3. People will flock to hear false prophets, phony preachers, and outrageously biblically wrong churches but will not turn to Jesus Christ for true salvation. But, as men of truth we must keep doing our work, feeding the sheep of God and preaching the gospel message to anyone we can in the entire world. It is still the single most important message in the world, and let us not ever treat it as anything less. Jesus said in John 3:18 “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” As Pastors this is the main thought we must keep in our minds, that without the belief of Jesus Christ in a sinner’s heart, they are already condemned. While we cannot saved them, they will not be saved without hearing the gospel message.  Romans 10:14 “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” That is a proclaimer who heralds or cries it to the top of our voice for all to hear. Shout it brethren, shout it from the pulpits, shout it from the housetops, shout it from the mountain tops, SHOUT IT! And please remember, it is the single most important message you will ever preach.

The Knife Of The Heavenly Surgeon:
By Charles Spurgeon

"This sickness is not unto death." John 11:4

From our Lord's words, we learn that there is a limit to sickness. In all sickness, the Lord says to the waves of pain, "Hitherto shall you go—but no further!" His fixed purpose is not the destruction of His people—but the instruction of His people. Wisdom hangs up the thermometer at the furnace mouth—and regulates the heat!

1. The limit is encouragingly comprehensive. The God of providence has limited the time, manner, intensity and effects of all our sicknesses. Each throb is decreed, each sleepless hour predestinated, each relapse ordained, each depression of spirit foreknown, and each sanctifying result eternally purposed. Nothing great or small escapes the ordaining hand of Him who numbers the hairs of our head!
2. This limit is wisely adjusted to our strength, to the end designed, and to the grace apportioned. Affliction does not come by 'chance'—the weight of every stroke of God's rod—is accurately measured. He who made no mistakes in balancing the clouds, and measuring out the heavens—commits no errors in measuring out the ingredients which compose the medicine of souls. We cannot suffer too much—nor be relieved too late!
3. The limit is tenderly appointed. The knife of the heavenly Surgeon never cuts deeper than is absolutely necessary. "He does not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men." A mother's heart cries, "Spare my child!" but no mother is more compassionate than our gracious God. When we consider how self-willed we are—it is a wonder that we are not driven with a sharper bit!

The thought is full of consolation—that He who has fixed the bounds of our habitation, has also fixed the bounds of our tribulation.

Looking to this Lamb!
By William Mason

"Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" John 1:29

To continually behold this Lamb of God—is life to our souls, and death to our sins! Sin cannot terrify with its guilt, nor prevail in its power—while the heart is looking to this Lamb!
Thus to behold—is to be happy. Thus to look—is to be holy. May this, O my soul, be your daily employment below, until you behold the Lamb in the midst of the throne above! Astonishing mystery!
Thanks to the gracious Father—for the gift of this precious Lamb! Thanks to this holy Lamb—for bearing and taking away sin! Thanks to the loving Spirit—for showing this Lamb to
poor sinners and myself!

"I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne!" Rev. 5:6

When the bird of thought was let go!

~  ~  ~  ~

(A.W. Tozer)

Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling--fix your thoughts on Jesus!" Hebrews 3:1

"Bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ." 2 Corinthians 10:5

What we think about when we are free to think about what we will--that is what we are, or will soon become.

Anyone who wishes to check on his true spiritual condition may do so by noting what his voluntary thoughts have been over the last hours or days. What has he thought about, when free to think of what he pleased? Toward what has his inner heart turned, when it was free to turn where it would?

When the bird of thought was let go, did it fly out like the raven to settle upon floating carcasses--or did it like the dove circle and return again to the ark of God? Such a test is easy to run, and if we are honest with ourselves we can discover not only what we are--but what we are going to become. We will soon be the sum of our voluntary thoughts!

Long practice in the art of mental prayer (that is, talking to God inwardly as we work or travel) will help to form the habit of holy thoughts.

"For as he thinks within himself, so he is." Proverbs 23:7

"Oh, Lord, You know the constant struggle which we have with our thought life. You know how often our thoughts settle on rotten carcasses. Take control of my thoughts today, and move me along in the development of the habit of holy thought. Amen."

And I will bring the blind by a way [that] they knew not; I will lead them in paths [that] they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them. (Isaiah 42:16)

The incredible love of the Father shines upon His children bringing them out of their evil darkness and into His glorious light. His light guides His people through the shadows of death. And through the grave difficulties of their lives, they are brought into places of indescribable peace and joy. As believers of Christ, we are promised this ever-present light that will lead us into the gracious sanctuary of the Lord. In this we can find hope in an everlasting rest.

The cause of all His anguish!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(John Newton)

"My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" Mark 15:34

Come, friend, let us leave our troubles to themselves for a while--and let us walk to Golgotha, and there take a view of His troubles!

Behold the Beloved of God, perfectly spotless and holy--yet made an example of the severest vengeance. Behold Him . . .
  prostrate and agonizing in the garden;
  enduring the vilest insults from wicked men;
  torn with whips, and nails, and thorns;
  suspended, exposed, wounded, and bleeding upon the cross;
heavily distressed, being forsaken by His Father.

Sin was the cause of all His anguish! He stood in the place of sinners--and therefore He was not spared. Not any, or all, the evils which the world has known, afford such proof of the dreadful effects and detestable nature of sin, as the knowledge of Christ crucified!

Proverbs 20:7  The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

Weak and singular and odd!

(John Newton)

A consistent Christian, whose integrity, humility, and philanthropy, mark his character and adorn his profession--will in time command respect.

But his attachment to the unfashionable truths of the Gospel, and his separation from the maxims and pursuits of the world--will render him weak and singular and odd in their eyes.

"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated Me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you!" John 15:18-19

I perceive that your heavenly Father has again put you into the furnace!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Letters of John Newton)

My Dear Madam,
I perceive that your heavenly Father has again put you into the furnace, and I trust that He will divinely impress upon your heart, that there is a needs be for it--and that the outcome of your present trial shall surely end in good to your soul.

His Word tells us that trials are absolutely necessary, and why they are so--as He would not afflict those whom He loves, but for their real profit. So He chooses those afflictions for us, and appoints them for us at such seasons, and attended with such circumstances--as He sees will be (all things considered) most for our spiritual advantage. The afflictions and trials of His people are always sent, either to cure--or to prevent something still worse.

Satan is compared to a fowler, and we sometimes are as little upon our guard as a thoughtless bird--the danger is close to us, but we are not aware of it. But, as a sudden noise affrights the bird, and makes it take wing and escape the snare--so the Lord often disappoints the devices of the enemy, by sending a seasonable trial to His dear children, which arouses them, and makes them flee to Him for safety.

I have often thought that if David had fallen and broke his leg when he was going up to the housetop--he would have missed the sight of Bathsheba, and that long train of evils which made him cry out of broken bones in a still more painful sense.

Just so, we do not know how things might have been with us--if such or such a painful dispensation had not happened. A course of continual prosperity might have lulled us to sleep. We must admit this, when we find ourselves still apt to be drowsy--even though the Lord is pleased to put thorns into our pillow.

Notwithstanding the feeling proofs we have of the vanity of the present state, our spirits are still too apt to cleave to the dust. What then might have been the case--had our path been always smooth?

He is a good master to serve--I have found Him to be so for thirty years.

Cheer up, dear Madam, the Lord does all things well! Do not be afraid of storms--for you have an infallible Pilot who will guide you with His eye, uphold you with His arm, and is every minute bringing you nearer to the harbor of eternal rest and peace!

We have just began harvest in these parts. The grain has passed through a variety of weather. Frosts and winds, rains and heat, each of which, singly, would have destroyed it--have each in their places (through the blessing of the Lord's overruling providence) concurred to bring it to its present maturity. The farmers here, as well as elsewhere, have had different fears and complaints at different times; they have thought sometimes the weather too cold or too hot, too wet or too dry, by turns. But their fears were groundless and vain--the crop is ripe, the stalks are loaded, and bend under the weight of the grain.

Is not this an emblem of the spiritual life? What changes of weather have we passed through, since the seeds of grace were first sown in our hearts! How often have we been ready to murmur at the appointments of the Heavenly Gardener! How hardly could we be persuaded that the afflictions, temptations, and trials which we have been exercised with--have, in their places, been no less subservient to our growth, than the more pleasing sunshine we have been sometimes favored with?

Yet, I trust, we are still growing and getting forward. Neither frost or floods have been able to destroy us; and Oh, Madam, (may our hearts rejoice at the thought!) the harvest is approaching! When He sees that we are fully ripe--when all that He has designed to do for us, in us, and by us, is completed--then He will separate us from these clods of earth, and remove us into His dwelling place, where we shall be done with fears and trials forever!

We shall not then live this poor dying life--neither shall we have to complain of an evil heart of unbelief. We shall not complain of a cold and careless heart--because we shall be at the fountain-head of all our best wishes and desires! We shall be enjoying, through eternal ages, that ineffable bliss which is prepared for all who love God, and who have been called by divine grace, out of the service of sin, Satan, and the world--to love and serve Him who is the Rock of eternal ages. Yes, my dear Madam, we shall, with unspeakable delight--see Jesus as He is, and be completely like Him! Let us, then, not be weary in well doing; for, in due season, we shall reap, if we fail not.

I am, my dear Madam,
Your obliged and affectionate Servant,
John Newton

It is no wonder that they were so dejected!

  ~  ~  ~  ~

(James Buchanan, "The Office and Work of the Holy Spirit" 1842)

"I am now going away to Him who sent Me . . . Because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart." John 16:5-6

It is no wonder that they were so dejected in the prospect of losing the personal presence of Him who was . . .
  their kindest friend,
  their unwearied benefactor,
  their patient teacher--whose . . .
wisdom was their guide,
power was their defense,
sympathy was their consolation,
approval their was reward, and
salvation was their highest hope.

They were attached to Him as a personal Friend--by the strongest ties of gratitude, and admiration, and love.

They had long associated with Him on terms of most endearing intimacy.

They had often looked with delight on His compassionate countenance, 'full of grace and truth'.

They had listened to his public preaching and His private conversation, when 'He spoke as never any man spoke'.

They had witnessed His miracles of mercy, and His life of unwearied beneficence, 'when He went about continually doing good'.

They had themselves received at His hands every benefit which divine love, combined with the most perfect human kindness, could bestow.

And can we deem it astonishing, if the thought of parting with such a Friend, whose appearance, and voice, and person were entwined with their fondest affections--filled their hearts with especial sadness?

Sweet is the aroma of such a glorious salvation as ours. We were destined for death everlasting. Yet now, believer rejoice! For our destiny is life never-ceasing!

Psalm 119:11
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

O what a joy it is for the child of God to become familiar with His Word. O the blessing we receive when our Heavenly Father teaches us from His Word. And then one of the greatest blessings is when He gives us the ability to remember what He has taught. When trials and tribulations come. In good times and bad. When posed questions about God from others. What a blessing to able to bring those teachings back to memory. But we must remember it is not of our own doing. As with everything, it is our Lord who has instilled these memories with in us and it is Him that gives us the ability to remember what He would have us to remember when the time comes.
O child of God, study the Word of our Heavenly Father. Read of His Son, our Lord and Savior, and of the grace and mercy and love that has been bestowed upon us. Commit to memory those verses that are near and dear to us. Then pray our Lord will use you as a witness for Him to those you are around daily.

Praise ye the Lord!!!

Hebrews 10:25  Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

The bulk of my congregation were burglars, highway robbers, and poor unhappy prostitutes!

~  ~  ~  ~

(John Newton)

"But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on Him and receive eternal life!" 1 Timothy 1:16

You would have liked to have been with me last Wednesday, when I preached at the prison. The bulk of my congregation were burglars, highway robbers, and poor unhappy prostitutes--such as infest the streets of this city, sunk in sin, and lost to shame. I had a hundred or more of these criminals before me.

I preached from 1 Timothy 1:15, "Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst!" and began with telling them my own story. This gained their attention more than I expected. I spoke to them nearly an hour and a half. I shed many tears myself, and saw some of them shed tears likewise.

Ah! Had you seen their present condition, and could you hear the history of some of them, it would make you sing, "O to grace, how great a debtor, daily I'm constrained to be!"

By nature, they were no worse than the most upright and moral people; and there was doubtless a time when many of them little thought what they would live to do and suffer.

I might have been, like them, in chains--and one of them have come to preach to me, had the Lord so pleased!
In my days of folly and vanity, I was a chief sinner indeed--a vile blasphemer, and profligate to an extreme! But it has pleased Him to set me forth as a pattern of His mercy to other chief sinners--that none may despair when they see me!

"By the grace of God I am what I am!" 1 Corinthians 15:10

Everything is necessary--Nothing is necessary

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(John Newton)

Everything is necessary, which God sends.

Nothing is necessary, which God withholds.

How happy are those . . .
who can resign all to Him,
who see His hand in every trying dispensation, and
who believe that He chooses better for them--than they could possibly choose for themselves!

Faithful are the wounds of that Friend who was Himself wounded and slain for us, and who now reigns over all!

Christ is sovereign over all of our trials.

He is the Supreme Disposer of all that concerns us, that He . . .
numbers the very hairs of our heads,
appoints every trial we meet with--in number, weight, and measure,
and will allow nothing to befall us, but what shall contribute to our good.

The view of trials as a necessary medicine suited to our disease--powerfully reconciles us unto every cross.

What a comfort to be assured that our afflictions do not happen to us at random--but are all under the direction of infinite wisdom and love, and all engaged to work together for good to those who love the Lord!

"We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him. (Hosea 14:4)

Praise be to God that He, in the midst of our depravity, drew us to Him with the sweet chords of His melodious grace. We were wretched and iniquitous, yet He chose to love us freely. Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, provider of our salvation and promise of hope!

II Thessalonians 3:3  But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.

Morning Devotionals January 18, 2018

Amos 5:10
“They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.”

In our pride we often think of this verse when it comes to a man of God preaching against the sins of the world and those sinners outside the Lord's churches who cause grief on God's people for them simply being God's people.
But who was this verse originally written to and about? If we do an in-depth study of the books of the prophets in the later half of the Old Testament we see these men were being used of God to preach the sins of Israel and Judah. God would give them the words to say and they would go out and proclaim God's word to the people. God's people.
Over and over we see God tell of the sins of His people in the books. We read of how God instructed His prophets to go preach and warn His people of His impending doom if they did not repent of their sins.
The nations of Israel and Judah had fallen into spiritual adultery and were following after false gods. Yet today, we take no consideration of our own sins against God. We heed not the warnings God has recorded in His Word of how He destroyed a great nation because of their sin. We fail to see the sins of the Lord's churches.
1 Peter 4:17
“For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?”
Just like those in the world, God's people will persecute and hate a man who comes preaching the truth about sin. When the message cuts to the heart. When the preacher touches the pet sins of the people. They will most times rebel and seek to explain away what he preaches. How many of us preachers will forgo preaching on certain sins because we know our closest friends and family and maybe even ourselves will be convicted?
Even as the children of God, we are a wicked lot. We deny our Lord in so many things we do every day. Yet He has grace and mercy on us. The love of our Lord is immeasurable. It is everlasting. Praise God for His loving kindness and His long suffering for His people!!!
I know I say this often, but, if ye love Him, follow His commandments. Praise Him constantly for His grace and mercy on us. Pray without ceasing.

Praise ye the Lord!!!

Last week we had a lion in town!

~  ~  ~  ~

(Letters of John Newton)

July 7, 1778
My dear friend,
Last week we had a lion in town. I went to see him. He was astonishingly tame--as friendly with his keeper, and as docile and obedient as a pet dog. Yet the man told me he had his surly fits, when they dared not go near him.

No looking-glass could show my face more justly--than this lion shows my heart! I could trace every feature--as wild and fierce by nature; yes, much more so--but grace has in some measure tamed me. I know and love my Keeper, and sometimes watch His looks that I may learn His will. But, oh! I have my surly fits too! Seasons when I relapse into the savage again, as though I had forgotten all.

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins. (1 John 4:10)

Our love for God cannot save us, but His love for us can. It is because of His love that we are given His grace to enter the kingdom of heaven (Ephesians 2:8).

My Prayer: Thank you for Your endless love! It is only through your grace that I can be granted eternal life.

The foundation of all true knowledge of God

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Arthur Pink)

The foundation of all true knowledge of God, must be a clear mental apprehension of His perfections as revealed in Holy Scripture. An unknown God can neither be trusted, served nor worshiped. Something more than a theoretical knowledge of God is needed by us. God is only truly known in the soul, as we . . .
  yield ourselves to Him,
  submit to His authority, and
regulate all the details of our lives by His holy precepts and commandments.

Romans 4:16-22  Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb:
He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

As many heads as a Hydra, and as many lives as a cat!

(John Newton)

Beware of SELF! This is the worst enemy we have to deal with!
  Self-will,
  self-wisdom,
  self-righteousness,
  self-seeking,
  self-dependence,
  and self-boasting.
It is a large family--and I cannot count up all the branches! They are all nearly related to Satan--and they are all a sworn enemy to our peace.
If we lie low--then the Lord will raise us up.
But if we will be something--then His arm will surely pull us down.

That monster SELF has as many heads as a Hydra, and as many lives as a cat! It is more than twenty-five years since I hoped it was fast nailed to the Cross! But alas, it is alive--and still mixing with and spoiling everything I do!

(N.B. The Hydra was a serpentine mythological water monster with many heads.
For every head chopped off--the Hydra would re-grow a couple of new heads.)

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: (1 John 2:1)

Recognition of our sin nature may bring a feeling of imperfection and grave hopelessness to our souls. However, the magnificent love of God fills this overwhelming void in our hearts through Christ Jesus. By His blood, we have a righteous advocate who presents us pure and blameless before the almighty God. Thus, we are given the tremendous victory over death as His righteousness conforms us into His image.

A Thought From our Pastor:

We Are Nothing Outside Of Jesus Christ!
“We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised.” 1 Corinthians 4:10

As believers in Jesus Christ we quickly understand that He is our all and in all, we are nothing outside of Him. We see here that the Apostle Paul is speaking about himself and all the others with Him. People want to believe that they are someone wise, good, strong, and able, but this could not be farther from the biblical truth. God said he chose the foolish, weak, and unacceptable of the world for His own. But one might ask, was Saul of Tarshus those thing before salvation, and the answer would be absolutely not. Saul was a very intelligent as was Luke, Mark, and etc. etc. etc. as was also Nicodemus who was a ruler of the Jews. God never said He did not choose great and smart people, but all these great and smart people were ignorant of Jesus Christ and His salvation. See salvation is like Jesus Christ, both are rejected by mankind. People who do not trust Jesus Christ for their salvation are unsaved and ignorant of God’s salvation. You can be like Saul of Tarshus, Nicodemus, or have a collage education or even a PhD and it matters not scripturally. And on the other hand, you can be a nobody with little or no education and have a masters in biblical studies. See, it is not who or what you are in this world, it is what God has made you scripturally. Paul was a man who truly understood this, because as smart as he was as a Jew, he had to become a biblical fool to understand Jesus Christ and God’s word. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 3:18 “Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.” People attempt to use their human logic and worldly education in a biblical work and they fail. If you do not become a fool, you will never learn the bible. Paul wrote in our text that “…but ye are wise in Christ…” and only is Christ. So, while some people may flash around their worldly education, and brag about their worldly knowledge, they are nothing but lost fools heading for the fires and flames of the eternal hell. It is not until you are “in Christ Jesus” that you can be smart. Worldly intelligence is of no value without faith in Jesus Christ. You can sit in the assemblies of masses and megachurch status for decades listening to the men with PhD’s for years, die and go to hell for you troubles. And on the other-hand, you can sit under a Master of the scriptures and be saved and spend eternity with Jesus Christ. Now, when I say, “master of the scriptures” I do not mean they are Theologians but rather well learned of the scriptures. The next thing we realize is “…we are weak, but ye are strong…” but only in Christ. As with our education in the scriptures we also learn that we are unable to do anything about salvation. People who are saved without the faith of Jesus Christ in their hearts are lost and heading for the flames of hell. In this flesh we are weak, fleshly we may believe we are strong, and that we can accomplish anything we set our minds too. However, in Christ we realize how weak and foolish we were in the flesh. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 2:2 - 5 “For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified…And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling…And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power…That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” Only in Christ, and by the power of God through the work of the Holy Spirit can we ever accomplish anything spiritually. In Christ we realize that we are no longer foolish, weak, but rather smart, strong and honorable but to the world we are foolish, weak, and despised, as Paul put is in our text. As Christians we must never forget who we are and what we are in Christ. However, we must never forget who we are to the world, foolish and hated. Beloved, no matter what others think of you, always remember who you are in Christ, and remember you are a Christian because of Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit. “For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.” 1 Corinthians 4:20

Led By The Spirit:
By Brother Curtis Pugh

Romans 8:14 says: “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” While several other evidences of true son-ship are given in the Bible this one cannot be ignored. They are true sons who experience the leadership of the Holy Spirit in their lives. He is the Holy Spirit – not an unholy Spirit.  He promotes holiness, leading the children of God in right paths. As the author of the Bible, He never leads contrary to the Scriptures.

There are two common Greek words translated sons: “teknon” which has to do with being a “born one.” But the word here is “huios” (pronounced “WHEE ohs”) which carries with it the idea of not only being a born one, but of also being in some measure like the parent. We say, He's the “spit and image” (actually spirit and image) of his father or grandfather, etc. The Holy Spirit is God and leads the born again one to grow in likeness to God: in godliness. He is also called “the Spirit of Christ” and leads one to be like Christ. Thus “...it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure,” (Philippians 2:13).

For the Holy Spirit to lead an individual, that person must first be indwelt by Him. “..Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his,” (Romans 8:9). This indwelling of the Spirit in the child of God begins at the new birth: the commencement of spiritual life in the experience of every child of God. Jesus likened the Spirit in his birth-work to the uncontrolled wind, saying, “The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit,” (John 3:8).

This indwelling of the Holy Spirit who is the cause of the new birth is a sovereign act of God. That is, the new birth or regeneration is not something that a sinner brings to pass by anything that he does. Remember these words about those born from above: “Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God,” (John 1:13).

The Spirit of God leads to liberty for we read: “But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law,” (Galatians 5:18). In John 20:22 we read that Jesus' disciples received the Holy Spirit to indwell them. Prior to that time the Holy Spirit had come on men for service and had left them at His will. We read of Christ thus: “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost.” Since that time this glorious privilege has been the reality experienced by those born again. Are you led by the Holy Spirit?

Religion is not to be confined to devotional exercises

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(John Newton)

Religion is not to be confined to devotional exercises--but rather consists in doing all that we are called to do, with a single eye to His glory and will, from a grateful sense of His love and mercy to us. This is the chemistry which turns every mundane thing into gold, and stamps a value upon common actions!

When a mother is making or mending the children's clothes, or teaching them, or cleaning the kitchen, or a saucepan--she may be as well employed, as when she is upon her knees or at the Lord's Table.

It is an great mistake to think that all time is lost--which is not spent in bible-reading, or hearing sermons, or prayer.
These are properly called means of grace--and should be attended to in their proper season.
But the fruits of grace--are to appear in our common daily course of conduct.

It would be wrong for a mother to neglect the house of God--and it would be equally wrong to neglect the prudent management of her own house. It is chiefly as a wife and mother of a family, that she can let her light shine to His praise. I would not have her think that she could serve the Lord better in any other station, than in that in which God in His providence has placed her.

A simple desire to please God, to walk by the rule of His Word, and to do all to His glory . . .
like the fabled magic stone, turns all to gold,
consecrates the actions of common life, and
makes everything that belongs to our situation and duty in domestic life, a part of our religion.

"So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do--do all to the glory of God!" 1 Corinthians 10:31

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence [is] fulness of joy; at thy right hand [there are] pleasures for evermore. (Psalm 16:11)

O Delight of delights! O great Bringer of Joy! Praise the Lord all the earth. For by His name is pleasure brought and in His presence is pleasure known! Apart from His life is heard no joyous strain nor delighted laugh. All happiness bought apart from the cross is a counterfeit. Take your heart and soul and meaning in the Lord and your joy will ever be complete!

Psalm 115:1-3  Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake.
Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God?

But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

If we could but grasp this in the depth of our being!

(John Newton)

"The LORD does whatever pleases Him--in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths. He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth; He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from His storehouses." Psalm 135:6-7

God's sovereignty is but another name for the unlimited exercise of wisdom and goodness and power. Nothing can hinder Him.

Every drop of rain hits its appointed target--and every particle of dust is carried by the wind to its appointed resting place.

If we could but grasp this in the depth of our being, our souls would be liberated to depend fully on God's governance over our lives, and to learn to count trials, all joy!

"Our God is in heaven--He does whatever pleases Him." Psalm 115:3

"All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as He pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back His hand or say to Him: What have you done?" Daniel 4:35

And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve [me] unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom [be] glory for ever and ever. Amen. (2 Timothy 4:18)

Worry. Anxiety. Fear. Timidity. This is the way of the old man. Yet we, as believers, have been created anew to a heavenly life and spirit both bold and courageous. No longer need we fear at all, for in the Lord we have become so much more than conquerors! If God is for us-and He most certainly is-there is nothing to stand victorious against us. Psalm 40:11-17  Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.
For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.
Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me.
Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.
Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.
Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified.

But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.

John 15:17-21  These things I command you, that ye love one another.
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.

(John Flavel)

It was an excellent reply that a Christian mother once made to a friend--when her beloved and only child lay in a dangerous sickness at the point of death.

The friend asked the mother, "What would you now ask of God, in reference to your child? Would you beg Him for your child's life?"

The mother answered, "I refer that to the will of God."

"But," said her friend, "if God would refer it to you--what would you choose then?"

"Why truly," said she, "if God would refer it to me--I would refer it back to Him again!"

The Inability of the Law to Justify

Day by Day by Grace
Bob Hoekstra
January 10, 2018

Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ…But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "The just shall live by faith." (Galatians 2:16 and 3:11)

Our great initial need before God is to be justified, to have God Himself declare us not guilty, to have the Lord pronounce us righteous in His sight. At first glance this appears to be an impossible situation for man. God, our Judge, is holy by His nature. Man (because of sin) is unholy by nature. "But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags" (Isaiah 64:6).
The consequences of such ungodliness are inevitably universal and appropriately severe. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…For the wages of sin is death" (Romans 3:23 and 6:23a). The just sentence for all of humanity, in light of their sins against a pure, holy, and eternal God, is death (everlasting separation from God).
The law of God offers no help and provides no hope of remedying this dire situation. People are "not justified by the works of the law." Trying one's best to measure up to the law never produces a verdict of not guilty. In all of history, Jesus was the only one who could be evaluated by God's law and receive a declaration of living righteously. Jesus was "in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin" (Hebrews 4:15). No other person could ever perform sufficiently before God's law to achieve a declaration of righteousness. "No one is justified by the law in the sight of God."
Vows and pledges of personal improvement offer no hope. Asking others how to strive more earnestly provides no assistance. Only faith supplies the necessary remedy. "A man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ." Trusting in our own best efforts leaves us guilty before God. Trusting in Christ's perfect work on the cross makes us justified before God. "The just shall live by faith."

O Lord, my God, I praise You for Your glorious grace poured out upon me in justification. By Your grace alone You have declared me righteous in Your sight. I was totally guilty before Your holy law. I had no excuses and no hope of rescuing myself. Your law rightly condemned me, and I never could have reversed that verdict by my own performance. I trusted in Your Son, and You pronounced me righteous before You. To You, my Lord, I give all honor, glory, adoration, and thanksgiving, through Christ Jesus, my Savior, Amen.

Romans 8:26-27  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Every step along the path of life

~  ~  ~  ~

(John Newton)

"Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith!" Hebrews 12:2

Every step along the path of life, is a battle for the Christian to keep the eyes of the heart on Jesus.

If I may speak my own experience, I find that to keep my eye simply upon Christ, as my peace, and my life--is by far the hardest part of my calling.

Hungering and thirsting for Christ, is the central daily Christian discipline.

We depend on Him for hourly supplies of wisdom, strength, and comfort!

To know Jesus, is the shortest description of true grace;
to know Him better, is the surest mark of growth in grace;
to know Him perfectly, is eternal life.

This includes all I can wish for my dear friends--that you may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of Jesus.

Daily Thoughts January 8, 2018

Romans 8:28-39  And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are THE CALLED according to his purpose.
For whom he did FOREKNOW, he also did PREDESTINATE to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also CALLED: and whom he called, them he also JUSTIFIED: and whom he justified, them he also GLORIFIED.
What shall we then say to these things? IF GOD BE FOR US, WHO CAN BE AGAINST US?
He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? IT IS GOD THAT JUSTIFIETH.
Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also MAKETH INTERCESSION FOR US.
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
NAY, IN ALL THESE THINGS WE ARE MORE THAN CONQUERORS THROUGH HIM THAT LOVED US.
FOR I AM PERSUADED, THAT NEITHER DEATH, NOR LIFE, NOR ANGELS, NOR PRINCIPALITIES, NOR POWERS, NOR THINGS PRESENT, NOR THINGS TO COME,

NOR HEIGHT, NOR DEPTH, NOR ANY OTHER CREATURE, SHALL BE ABLE TO SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF GOD, WHICH IS IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD.

O what a melting consideration is this!

"The Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me!" Galatians 2:20

Out of Christ's condemnation--flows my justification!

Out of His agony--comes my victory!

Out of His pain--comes my ease!

Out of His stripes--comes my healing!

Out of His gall and vinegar--comes my honey!

Out of His curse--comes my blessing!

Out of His crown of thorns--comes my crown of glory!

Out of His sin-atoning death--comes my eternal life!

O what a melting consideration is this!

Daily Promises

Blue Letter Bible
January 8, 2018

O ye sons of men, how long [will ye turn] my glory into shame? [how long] will ye love vanity, [and] seek after leasing? Selah. But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him. (Psalm 4:2-3)

Rejoice you poor in spirit! The Lord is ever your protector! The High King of Heaven cares for His people! Trust in His longing to do good for His children! He is faithful. He is good. He is loving. And in the end, even His children who suffer earthly poverty shall be blessed with all the riches the heavenly throne affords!

A Thought From our Pastor:

Churches Are Warned.
“Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.” Revelation 2:5

We live in an age where people and even Christians are laidback with their doctrine. We live in an age where, so many churches are laidback in their doctrine. This is unacceptable to the Lord Jesus Christ, whom is the Head of the Churches. Jesus speaks here of removing the candlestick and if He does then they are no longer a church. “…will remove thy candlestick out of his place…” As members we must remember that the churches belong to Jesus Christ and not to us. He builds them and sustains them, not us. It is Him that supports them in every way, and without Him, no matter what else, a church will fail and not be a true church. Paul wrote ...For in him we live, and move, and have our being..." Acts 17:28, personally and in Churches we are sustained. Pastors are also the Lords, He set them into place and sustains them just as He does everything else. With all this being said, Christians and churches are not allowed to do as they please in any area. Churches and their membership must be warned that Jesus Christ is the head of the churches and He is the very One who sets the candlesticks in them, and He has every right to pull them out. Paul wrote to the church at Corinth, “And he is before all things, and by him all things consist…And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” Colossians 1:17-18 The word “consist” means - to set together or to constitute – meaning He “maintains in continuous stability and productiveness” of the churches being and the believers being. Therefore, it tells us that if a church fails to maintain doctrinal truth they will fail as a church because Jesus Christ will remove their candlestick making them a non-scriptural church. Consider it to be like unto expulsion, the Lord, the Head of the churches will personally exclude a church from the bride until “except thou repent.” Rev. 2:5 If the churches and their pastors fail to realize this, then in glory they will. We must all realize that Christ Jesus has a job and we have a job, we cannot do the Lord’s job in building and sustaining the churches. Our job as churches and pastors is to maintain the truth in doctrine, money, and in getting the gospel to a lost and dying world. So many have lost their sense of what we are to do, they have broken from their responsibility and have attempted to do the Lord’s job. They have tried to serve mammon and God, but we cannot serve two masters, saith the Lord because one will cause us to hate the other. Attendance and money are the two main reasons churches leave the truth to serve untruth. We must realize we live in the day of apostasy and both attendance and money are going to suffer. I believe we are living in the last days and because of this times will get harder and persecution will get much worse in the years to come. Now is the time for the churches to come together and not allow petty disagreements to separate us. I believe if time last it will get so hard for churches and truth to stand that only the most spiritual will survive. Let’s face it folks, the church age is coming quickly to an end. This is our warning, we either stand as a church, walk as a church, and worship as a church, or get excluded as a church by Jesus Christ her head. Growth and prosperity is not for the churches of truth in this day, not in the day of apostasy. All we will accomplish by pushing these things is failure. We may grow and be prosperous in this world, but not in the Lord, spiritual, and in truth. The Lord warned the church at Ephesus to “Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works” or else He will remove the candlestick, that church does not exist today. Churches only fail when the Lord Jesus Christ no longer sustains them, or they have reached their predestinated end. May God bless us all as we strive to maintain our work and worth fulness to our Head Jesus Christ.

Zeal Without Knowledge:
By Brother Curtis Pugh

Often zeal is a good thing. Zeal or enthusiasm for good things is to be commended. Being a “deadhead” on the job or as a parent or in service for the Lord makes life a burden. In the matter of our relationship with Him Christ said: “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent,” (Revelation 3:19). Not only do lost sinners need to repent, Christians also are guilty of sins daily. Walking with God is a matter of daily repentance.
But zeal or enthusiasm is a bad thing when it is coupled with ignorance. Two very young boys wanted to please their father. While he was at work they busied themselves in the garage with house paint, coating the family car a new color. They had zeal for a thing, but in their ignorance their enthusiasm caused them to do something harmful and costly. In religious matters zeal, coupled with ignorance, does much harm. We are well aware that there are religious zealots in this world who in their zeal beat their wives, mutilate their daughters and murder those who do not convert. The thief also may be zealous when he comes to steal and to destroy.
In Paul's day the Jews had great enthusiasm for the Old Testament Law. They had so much zeal for the Law that they missed Christ. Paul wrote of them: “For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth,” (Romans 10:2-4). Paul said that the righteousness which makes one acceptable to God is in Christ. He is the end of the Law for righteousness. Christ taught that the Old Testament Law-system was done away with when John the Baptist began to preach. He said, “The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man  [individual people] presseth into it,” (Luke 16:16).
And yet a great many people, some of them claiming to be following Christ, are busy trying to establish their own righteousness by their attempt at keeping the Law. (Usually they pick and choose what parts of the Old Testament Law they want to keep.) But no man ever kept the Law. It was decided by the apostles and elders long ago that converts to Christ should not have the Law imposed upon them. Peter said regarding the Gentile converts and the Law, “Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they,” (Acts 15:10-11). “...By the works of the law shall no flesh be justified,” (Galatians 2:16). Be zealous, but according to truth!
