Romans 11:26-28

A Study of The Book of Romans

Lesson 83 Chapter 11:26 – 28

  1. Verse 26 “And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:”
    1. “And so all Israel shall be saved…” Please do not look at this as all of Israel from start to finish will be saved, God has already pointed out different.

a. Romans 9:27 “Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:”

b. I believe this refers to the elect of Israel. We also see this with reference to Gentiles. 1 Timothy 2:3 - 4 “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; (4.) Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” – If God willed all men to be saved and all men to know the truth then they would. This is speaking about the elect of God. This is not speaking of the decreed will of God.

c. This is certain; all the elect will be saved, both Jew and Gentile.

    1. “…as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:”

a. Isaiah 59:20 “And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.”

b. It is believed (and I agree) that this is not speaking of the birth of Christ because it says “…and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:” – this is speaking of the return of Christ which is also the central thought here in this chapter. When “the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.” verse 25 during the redeemers return’s then will a remnant of Israel “…shall turn away ungodliness…”

  1. Verse 27 “For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.”
    1. This is a combination of two passages:

a. Isaiah 59:20 - 21 “And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD. (21.) As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.”

b. Jeremiah 31:33 - 34 “But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. (34.) And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

c. The Lord has promised to restore them it they were set aside, and to “…I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” Jeremiah 31:34 – and this will be after He has returned and ruptured the Gentile believers and His churches making their work finished.

    1. “…when I shall take away their sins.” Just as He has forgiven us He will also forgive them. – They will fully understand that what the blood of bulls and goats could not do the blood of Christ can.
  1. Verse 28 “As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes.”
    1. “As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes…” – Paul returns to the church at Rome here which is a Gentile church, “…enemies for your sakes…” Tells us a couple of things;

a. It is because of their hatred for Christ, the gospel, and God; they made room for the Gentiles to benefit from their downfall.

b. This hatred was because of Christ and the gospel. So God set them aside and we Gentiles benefited from it.

    1. “but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes.” – But because of ELECTION God still loves the nation of Israel, not all of them but a remnant of them as He will show in the tribulation period.
    2. Election of grace guarantees all the elect of God will always be loved of God because since He is eternal and never changes He cannot love and then change to hate. Praise our sovereign God.
