Romans 8:31-34

A Study of The Book of Romans

By Pastor Randy Johnson

Lesson 57 Chapter 8:31 – 34

  1. Verse 31 “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?”
    1. “What shall we then say to these things…” In this chapter God has told us blessing after blessing, with the greatest of these blessings being God saves sinners.

a. I like to believe this says “Can our hearts handle the blessings of God?” Blessing, after blessing, after blessing, and after blessing. The blessings of God never stops.

b. We will never loose our salvation. Verse 1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

c. Because Jesus Christ has made us free from sin and death. Verse 2 “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

d. For what we could not do for ourselves God done for us through Christ. Verse 3 “For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:”

e. While we could never (in the flesh) fulfill Gods law we have in Christ Jesus Verse 4 “That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

f. We were led to salvation by the Holy Spirit, Who makes no error nor ever fails. Verse 14 “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

g. Since we are saved we are the adopted children of God. Verse 17 “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”

h. We have the Holy Spirit of God in us the rest of our life on this earth. Verse 26 “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

i. We know that all things in our lives will work together for the good no matter how bad they may seem at the time, God has promised. Verse 28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

j. And greatest blessing of all to the Christian is God “foreknew “ us, God “predestinated us, God “called” us, God “justified” us and God will “glorify” us. Verses 29 - 30 “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. (30.) Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.”

k. Now once again I ask “What shall we then say to these things?” I must say words cannot be uttered to express our gratitude to God for His blessings, but one day we will utter proper praise to God for His blessings.

    1. “…If God be for us, who can be against us?” I believe this means “if Gods power can deliver all of these blessings to us then who can destroy us or harm us” No one can, If God delivers us then no one can stop Him.
    2. We may suffer in this life and many are against us for sure but they will not have the final victory, because God is for us. We do not need to fear what life, the world, Satan, or etc. may deliver because our promise is in verse 28 God is on our side and He is our FATHER!!!!
  1. Verse 32 “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”
    1. “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all…” This same God Who has given to us so many blessings delivered up His own Son in the man Christ Jesus that we might be delivered.
    2. Christ Jesus did not have to die nor did God have to deliver Him up, but He did because He loved us, just as He gave us all of these other blessings because He loves us. Acts 2:23 “Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:”
    3. “…but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” All things are free to us, but to God there was a big price.

a. Not just the death of Christ but rather the electing of sinners as sons.

b. The predestination of sinners as sons.

c. The calling of sinners as sons.

d. And the glorifying of sinners as sons.

e. However this could only be possible because of the deliverance of Jesus Christ to the cross.

  1. Verse 33 “Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.”
    1. The word “charge” means - who shall accuse, or condemn before God as sinners.

a. Not in this world because we will certainly be charged, however in the courts of God and with Jesus Christ as judge and jury we are innocent of all charges because He has already paid in full the sentence due.

b. Gods elect are safe and secure and will never suffer condemnation.

    1. “…It is God that justifieth.” That is right it is God and none other.

a. It is God that will judge and it is God that says our penalty had been paid, we owe no other.

b. God’s gift of salvation means we are set free from penalty. God justified us through Christ Jesus, nothing on mans part brought it about; it is 100% Gods gift to us because He loves us and has for all eternity past. He loves the elect or chosen ones and no other.

    1. Verse 34 sums it all up, “Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” - Hebrews 7:25 “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”
