Titus - 8

A Study Of The Book Of Titus.

Lesson 8 Chapter 2:1 – 3

By Pastor Randy Johnson

  1. Verse 1 “But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:”
    1. This continues the requirements for a Minister and Pastor. Pastors are not allowed to teach as they choose; their teachings (and all of them) must be sound doctrine.
    2. Ephesians 4:29 "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers."
    3. 2 Timothy 1:13 “Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.”
    4. Sound doctrine would be the doctrine of the bible. No one can change the truth, not a Pastor, not a church, not even the angels in heaven.
  2. Verse 2 “That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.”
    1. The aged men in he church would be the older church membership. I believe this refers to the father figures in the church. 1 John 2:14 "I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one."
    2. The older men in the church are to be examples for the younger membership.
    3. “sound in faith” they are also be sound in faith as the Pastor and other ministers. The church is not only about the Pastor but every member of the body.
    4. Lets not forget what Paul said in Chapter 1 Titus 1:13 “This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;”
    5. “in charity” since he went from “sound in faith to in charity” I believe the word sound should be in front of the words “in charity” so that he be sound in charity. It also fits the other requirements for the male membership of the church. Sound also in temperate .
    6. The older male membership are leaders and in being leaders they must be sound. There is only one way to lead and that is in truth.
    7. In order to be a leader love and patience is a must. 1 Timothy 1:5 “Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:” Remember the word “unfeigned” means with sincerity.
  3. Verse 3 “The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;”
    1. Yes ladies you are also examples and teachers in the Lords church. Ladies you are to be like the older men except the Lord added a couple of things for you.
    2. “behaviour as becometh holiness” – this would include properly caring for themselves, such as dressing, and in general appearance. 1 Timothy 2:9 “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;”
    3. “not false accusers” – that is little devils. 1 Timothy 3:11 “Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.”
    4. “not given to much wine” This is the same equipment for a Deacon. Why? Because just as it is not good to be a social drinker for the Pastor and is not good for a Deacon to drink much more it is also not good for the ladies to drink much. 1 Timothy 3:8 “Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;” – It is not proper for ladies to drink much, smoke, curse, or etc, but it is even worse for the ladies of the church what kind of example can they be.
    5. “teachers of good things” ladies of good things! That would include sound doctrine, how to be a lady in general, how to treat her husband, how to act in public, and etc.
    6. Verses 4 - 5 "That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, (5.) To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."
