Titus - 7

A Study Of The Book Of Titus.

Lesson 7 Chapter 1:13 – 16

By Pastor Randy Johnson

  1. Verse 13 “This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;”
    1. “This witness is true” – This is pretty harsh about these people but God confirmed it.
    2. “Wherefore rebuke them sharply” – The word “rebuke” means - tell a fault – and the Lord said “sharply” which means severity.

a. Titus 2:15 “These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.”

b. Proverbs 27:5 “Open rebuke is better than secret love.”

    1. “that they may be sound in the faith” – This should be the results but it doesn’t seem to work that way. Expulsion is suppose to deliver the astray back but it also doesn’t seem to work very often.

a. Psalms 141:5 “Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head: for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities.”

b. 1 Timothy 4:6 “If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.”

    1. Thomas Fuller once said: "If I speak what is false, I must answer for it; if truth, it will answer for me."
  1. Verse 14 “Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.”
    1. “Not giving heed to Jewish fables” – Old Jewish teaching was said to have been pretty wild stuff, and it is not Christian.
    2. “and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.” – it doesn’t matter if it is “Jewish Fables” or Arminianism it is all lies and myths and must be avoided.

a. Matthew 15:9 “But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”

b. Man will always follow man-made doctrine.

  1. Verse 15 “Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.”
    1. Basically this is saying truth is pure and always will be but the doctrine of man will always be lies and be spiritual harmful.
    2. This also deals with the eating of meat that we dealt with in Romans. Romans 14:20 “For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.”
  2. Verse 16 “They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.”
    1. People that claim to worship God are not actually worshiping Him. God must be worshiped in Spirit and truth. John 4:24 “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” – nothing less will work.
    2. God warned; 2 Corinthians 13:5Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?” 2 Timothy 3:5 "Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away."
