From the Pastor: Dr. M. J. Seymour, Sr.
“Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; … Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:” (I Pet. 3:1, 3-5)
Nowhere in the Holy Word of God does it teach that wives are to be in subjection to or under the tyrannical rule of every man without exception! Wives are not to be doormats to any man! However, wives are to be in subjection to their “own husbands.” The word “subjection” means to submit to one’s control, to obey, or to yield to. The thought in the Scriptures is for wife to yield herself willing to the leadership of her own husband as he follows the Lord. It does not mean she is required to obey the husband’s will to wallow in sin. Remember, all Scripture is to draw us to a pure and holy life before the Father. Thus, if one’s husband is not convinced to be obedient unto the Lord, the wife’s holy behavior may persuade him to do so.
This is to be done not by getting all dolled up, or by wearing alluring clothing and jewelry, or by using any particular garment. The evidence of the wife obeying the will of God and yielding herself to her own husband is displayed in her attitude and behavior. She is to be adorned with a holy exhibition of the new creature within her, born of the Spirit of God through the blood of Jesus, by the means of a “meek and quiet spirit,” “which is in the sight of God of great price.” In her willing obedience she becomes a great treasure to the heavenly Father. Holy women of old trusting God adorned themselves in this fashion, and so shall it be in these days.
