Romans 10:5-10

A Study of The Book of Romans

Lesson 72 Chapter 10:5 – 10

By Pastor Randy Johnson

  1. Verse 5 “For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.”
    1. This verse is a continuation from verse 4 “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” The law was never a saving tool and God did not create the law to be, the law was and is a condemning tool.
    2. This verse refers back to Leviticus 18:5 “Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD.”
    3. The question is; does this verse justify salvation by works? Only if you can fulfill the entire law from birth till death. Moses never said justification comes by works of the law, nether did Paul, nor did James. The entire bible concludes justification comes by faith in Christ and nothing else.
    4. “…That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.” Without Christ man must answer God in judgment for their sins and will be judged for their sins.
    5. Anyone who attempt to use this scripture to justify works for salvation is lost and going to hell at death.
    6. Deuteronomy 27:26 “Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say, Amen.” - Galatians 3:10 “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.”
  2. Verse 6 “But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)”
    1. “But the righteousness which is of faith…” The words “of faith” has a meaning here, salvation is not just by faith but also “of faith” of your personal faith, not just a faith but the faith that is in your heart in Christ.

a. Anyone can have faith in their mind that Christ Jesus is the Saviour, but without personal faith in your heart it is useless.

b. Hebrews 11 is known as the faith chapter lists everyone’s personal faith not just a general faith.

c. Righteousness; that is heaven bound faith is in the believers heart, because that is where Jesus is.

    1. “…Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven...” This was an expression used by the Jews to describe the difficulty of something. Let us look at it this way; “it is so high to heaven so I will never understand it, but Paul says it is not hard to ubderstand “…Say not in thine heart…”
    2. “… (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)” We do not have to bring Christ down from heaven, He has already come, again it is not that hard, because this would be impossible, however Christ has come and ascended again, believe thou thus?
    3. Verse 7 “Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)” This is like verse 6 except we cannot bring Christ up because He has already risen, salvation is simply not that hard, just be “of faith”.
  1. Verses 8 - 9 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; (9.) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
    1. Verse 8 comes from Deuteronomy 30:14 “But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.”

a. The way of salvation is simply, neither like reaching to heaven, nor like reaching in the deep, but it is in your mouth (as far as the gospel message) and easily understood, it is in your heart if you are saved.

b. “…that is, the word of faith, which we preach;” – that is faith in Christ is salvation to all that believe in his heart that Jesus is the Saviour of mankind. And this is the message we preach. Not that Moses preached Christ but rather faith, those in Old Testament times were justified by faith in God.

    1. Verse 9 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

a. That is to confess what is in your heart, which is Christ Jesus. This has nothing to do with prayer; it is professing your faith in Christ.

b. “…shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” It is not the confessing that saves but rather what is in your heart which is your faith in Christ Jesus. 1 John 4:15 “Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.”

c. The sinners prayer is not in play here because it is not scriptural.

  1. Verse 10 “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
    1. This is salvation, and must be first, then comes confession.
    2. This is the proper order of salvation.
    3. Matthew 10:32 “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.” Confessing what has happened, the event must come first.
    4. Luke 12:8 “Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:”
