Romans 10:11-15

A Study of The Book of Romans

Lesson 73 Chapter 10:11 – 15

By Pastor Randy Johnson

  1. Verse 11 “For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.”
    1. This verse is a quote of Isaiah 28:16 “Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.”

a. The faith here mentioned is faith in foundation laid in Zion which is Jesus Christ.

b. There is no doubt in the scriptures; salvation is complete in Jesus Christ and this is accomplished only in Jesus Christ.

    1. “…Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.” Is the same as “…he that believeth shall not make haste.” In Isaiah 28:16 Paul is not mis-quoting the scripture, both means that one will not loose faith in the Lord, or faith will continue.
    2. This does not mean hard times for the Christian will not come after salvation, but in anything in life faith will continue.
  1. Verse 12 “For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.”
    1. This tells us that salvation is the same for all no matter who you are.
    2. “…for the same Lord over all…” That is Jesus Christ, His death was for all of the elect. He did not just die for one class but rather all the elect at one time.
    3. Sin is forgiven the same for all through His blood.
    4. “…rich unto all that call upon him.” The word “rich” means - supreme in authority – in that salvation is only possible in Him, grace and mercy comes from Him, and He has supreme authority over spiritual death, and giving salvation.
  1. Verse 13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
    1. This comes from Joel 2:32 “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.” – We see here more is involved than just faith or faith in the mind, there must be a calling from God also, and there is only a remnant.
    2. This quote was quoted more than once, Peter also quoted Joel Acts 2:16, 21 “But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; (21.) And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
    3. Christians cannot read between the lines, we must always take the scriptures in context and fully as one book. Just because Peter and Paul said it a little different or did not quote word for word the entire scripture does not mean the entire scripture does not apply.
  1. Verse 14 “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” - We see three questions here:
    1. “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed...?”

a. This is total depravity; they will never call on Jesus Christ to save them because they rejected Him and deny Him and killed Him. Gentiles are basically the same, it is against mans nature to come to Christ for salvation.

b. So how will they call on Him for salvation? There must be a force to make them or to give them a desire to call and that is the calling of God.

    1. “…and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard…?”

a. The word heard means - come to the ears – that is to come to have ears to hear, or be given the ability to hear. One cannot hear with natural ears the spiritual ear gate must be opened.

b. Matthew 11:15 “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” – that is spiritual ears.

c. Matthew 13:16 “But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.” Blessed because you have spiritual eyes and ears.

    1. “…and how shall they hear without a preacher?”

a. The word preacher means – heralder of Divine Truth – a proclaimer of truth.

b. Not just anyone can preach or just because one is trained to preach does not make him a preacher.

c. God called preachers carry Gods message, no one else does.

d. This also shows the importance of preachers, and the great responsibility they have.

  1. Verse 15 “And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”
    1. John Gill said “The word “how” does not refer to the manner of preaching, but to the fact that there would be no preachers at all unless they were sent forth. To preach means to proclaim in a public manner, as a crier does. In the Scriptures it means to proclaim the gospel to people.”

a. If one is not SENT from God he is not a preacher nor a Pastor.

b. Jeremiah 1:7 “But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.”

c. Jeremiah 23:21 “I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.”

d. Jeremiah 14:14 - 15 “Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. (15.) Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.”

    1. “…as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”

a. Isaiah 52:7 “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!”

b. The word “beautiful” here means - belonging to the right hour or season (timely) or flourishing – so it means the blooming maturity and the swiftness of them.

c. The called man of God is eager to share Gods word and will suffer any persecution to do so. They are not cowards as those not called.

    1. “…preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” They bring the message of peace which is Christ Jesus, and evangelize good things from Gods word.
