Titus - 9

A Study Of The Book Of Titus.

Lesson 9 Chapter 2:6 – 9

By Pastor Randy Johnson

The object here is no matter who we are in the church or what office we hold or do not hold every single person is to make themselves an example for those younger than they are.

God has already spoken to the older men and women in verse 1 – 5 now He speaks to the younger.

Thomas Brooks once said "Example is the most powerful rhetoric."

  1. Verse 6 – 7 “Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. (7.) In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,"
    1. The word “exhort” carries the meaning of praying so the young men are to pray for grace to be of sound mind or in the right mind scripturally.
    2. Have you ever noticed that is a command for everyone, it is because if one is not in sound mind scripturally then they are not in the will of God. It all starts with a sound mind.
    3. In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works…”

a. This goes beyond their teaching and includes their everyday living.

b. The word “pattern” means die or stamp that is something embedded

c. Some are examples of what not to be but these young men are to display examples that should be followed. 1 Corinthians 10:5 - 7 “But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. (6.) Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. (7.) Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”

d. People well tend to follow the bad examples and the world and religious world are full of them but good examples are what is needed and expected of the Lord.

e. 1 Timothy 4:12 "Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity."

    1. “…in doctrine shewing uncorruptness…” one cannot be a good example to others without truth!

a. showing uncorruptness is not being a hypocrite, being unfaithful to Gods word, not being untrustworthy, and etc.

b. 2 Corinthians 2:17 "For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ."

c. I think God best defined this in 2 Corinthians 4:2 “But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.”

  1. Verse 8 “Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.”
    1. Paul continues with; “Sound speech, that cannot be condemned…”

a. Let me just add here; sound speak is like truth it can never be condemned. Now man may condemn it but God never will and He is the only one that counts. 2 Timothy 1:13 “Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.”

b. 1 Timothy 6:3 - 4 "If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; (4.) He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,"

    1. “…that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed…”

a. What puts a liar to shame? TRUTH!

b. Isaiah 66:5 "Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name's sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed."

    1. “…having no evil thing to say of you.” – meaning no evil can be justly alleged against you or what you teach. Philippians 2:14 - 16 "Do all things without murmurings and disputings: (15.) That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; (16.) Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain."
  1. Verse 9 “Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;”
    1. Servant would be secular employment as well as church employment. What ever we do or whom ever we work for we are to be obedient. Ephesians 6:5 “Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;”
    2. 1 Timothy 6:1 - 4 "Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. (2.) And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort. (3.) If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; (4.) He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,"
    3. “…not answering again;” - Not contradicting, or not disobeying.” This is no part of a servant’s duty; a servant is hired to do his master’s work, and this his master has a right to appoint.
