Romans 9:25-27

A Study of The Book of Romans

Lesson 67 Chapter 9:25 – 27

By Pastor Randy Johnson

  1. Verse 25 “As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.”
    1. The key to understand verse 25 is verse 24 “Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?”
    2. The verse while not a direct quote does reference Hosea 2:23 “And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God.”
    3. “As he saith also in Osee…” This is the book of Hosea; the comparison is Israel and the Gentiles. And election. (I will do my best to explain this, although it truly needs more study time for an in-depth detailed explanation.)

a. As far as Israel is concerned; God has basically divorced Israel or separated from them as far as using them. However be not mistaken God is not done with them, in fact in the tribulation we see a minimum of 144,000 saved and that 144,000 protected with the seal of God in their forehead for protection. Revelation 7:4 “And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel .”

b. However God is not using them today as the proclaimer’s of His gospel message this is done through the Gentile churches.

c. Hosea 3:4 - 5 “For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod (ay-fode - high priest’s shoulder piece), and without teraphim (ter-aw-feme - a healer or an Idol): (5.) Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days.” Verse 4 is Israel today and Verse 5 is later when Israel shall return to the Lord God for salvation.

d. Right now, today God uses the Gentiles and the churches, but Israel will return being carried by the Gentile churches.

e. “…I will call them my people, which were not my people…” The Gentiles were not Gods people in the Old Testament but were chosen just the same for the New Testament Israel or as the “spiritual Israel ”.

f. “…which was not beloved.” This is Hosea 2:23 “And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God.” We as Gentiles are now the beloved of God. Israel will return and join us also in due time.

  1. Verse 26 “And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.”
    1. This is a quote from Hosea 1:10 “Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.”
    2. “…And it shall come to pass, that in the place…” that is a place outside of Israel or other parts or lands of the world.
    3. “…that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.” That these Gentiles should be saved and called Gods children.
  2. Verse 27 “Esaias also crieth concerning Israel , Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:”
    1. “Esaias also crieth concerning Israel …” The word “crieth” means – to scream or to call aloud – but his cry basically went unheard just as ours does today. Isaiah 10:22 “For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.” However Isaiah was not alone in crying;

a. John 1:15 “John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.”

b. John 12:44 “Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.”

    1. “…Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:”

a. I hate to be the barer of bad news but not all Israelites will be saved, and neither will all Gentiles, only a “remnant” or those elected from the foundation of the creation of the world.

b. If the Israelites have for some thousand of years rejected God and His beloved Son Jesus Christ, then what makes God believe that a remnant of them will turn around? It is called “election” and making them repent just as with the Gentiles.

c. If it is not election and a call of grace then what? There is nothing else. Man is not that good at persuasion
