Morning Devotional March 31, 2018

Psalm 5:12
“For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.”

In this verse, David, who is in a time of great persecution in his life, states that our Lord will bless the righteous. Notice the blessing he speaks of is not fame or fortune. But is the blessing of mercy and grace from God . It is the blessing of God to protect the righteous.
Go back and read the rest of the chapter. David tells of his enemies. David tells of the persecution he suffers at the hands of those who, are not only trying to kill him, but are also spreading lies about him. They were trying to turn even his closest friends and allies against him. But praise God, God compassed David round about with a shield of protection and protected David from those who sought to harm him.
Was this blessing for David only? No. Though we may go through trials and tribulations and persecution in this life we have God's promise of protection if we will love Him and follow Him.
But even for the righteous there are times of rebellion. There are times our love for our Lord falters and we refuse to follow His commandments.
Even David. The man after God's own heart, rebelled at times. If though David was considered righteous he still failed at times. He suffered chastisement from the Lord for his rebellious ways and so do we. But God still counted him among the righteous. How? With all the evil we see in David's life? If you read the story of David you will see he always repented of his sin. No matter how great the sin. No matter how great the chastisement from the Lord for the sin. David always followed the Lord's commandment and repented.
We have been blessed with the book of Psalms. David wrote most of the Psalms collected there. David writes of his love of our Lord. He writes of how he knew he was not worthy of God's grace and mercy but how he was blessed beyond measure by our Lord's faithfulness in loving him.
Where are we today? Do we grief over our sin? Do we seek repentance for our wrongs and rebellions against our Lord? Or are we following the ways of the world with no care of what our Lord thinks?
Child of God, seek not the world or the glories there in. Seek our Lord and His righteousness. Seek to please the One who died to set us free from the temptations of this life. We ought to wake every morning seeking ways to please our Heavenly Father. We ought to be waking every morning begging Him to forgive us of even the smallest of sins. But what are we doing? Are our first thoughts every day of our Lord? Or are they of our job? Or is it our graving of our first cup of coffee and/or breakfast? Or a multitude of other things?
Seek the Lord. Follow Him in all things. Pray without ceasing. Go to bed at night with Him on your mind and wake the next morning with Him on your mind.
O how this is my pray for myself and all who reads this! To be in constant communion with our Heavenly Father. To be able to push aside the cares of this life and of this old sinful world and follow Christ and Christ alone!!!

Praise ye the Lord!!!

Am I a friend to all the friends of Christ?

Am I living for the glory of Christ?

Am I an honor to the name of Christ?

Am I walking in the steps of Christ?

Am I a blessing to the Church of Christ?

Am I daily, hourly, always, and in all things--aiming to please Christ?

Am I desiring to be with Christ?

Daily Promises

Blue Letter Bible
March 30, 2018

For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate [to be] conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. (Romans 8:29-30)

God chose those who would believe from the foundations of the world to be justified and glorified according to His purpose. Because God foreknew all things, there is nothing that can separate His children from His excellent love and grace. Even as evil powers come against us, we are made conquerors by the justification and glorification through the blood of Christ!

Psalm 4:5  Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.

These forty years in the wilderness!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Arthur Pink, "Last Things Last")

" And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no." Deuteronomy 8:2

This verse calls for a solemn review of our life--how far we have redeemed the time, or to what extent we have trifled it away.

We should be humbled at the recollection of how frequently we grumbled--because His way was not the one we desired. We should judge ourselves unsparingly--because we so often lagged behind, and sought to turn aside into forbidden bypaths. We should ponder the amazing grace of God in condescending to lead us across this trackless desert; and think, too, of His infinite forbearance in continuing to lead us--who are so ungrateful and contrary.

We should praise Him for having kept us in the Narrow Way--which we would have certainly forsaken, had we been left to follow the bent of our own evil lusts. And we also should return fervent thanks--that we are now a year's march nearer to our Heavenly Home.

" Search me, O God, and know my heart: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." Psalm 139:23-24

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. (James 4:10)

This conditional promise can be misused by some who have ulterior motives, but when we truly humble ourselves in the Lord's sight it can in no way be for our own lifting up. True humility would put ourselves last and that is what makes this paradoxical truth so amazing. We cannot lift our own selves up; it is only God who is able to do that and He only does that when we are humbled before Him. We also saw this demonstrated in Christ who "humbled Himself to the point of death-even the death of the cross" yet "God exalted Him" (Philippians 2:8-9).

Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (1 Peter 1:5)

Throughout this life, we are kept safe by the power of God. All that we are is because of the power of God. The salvation that we have been given will never be complete until we reach heaven. We should strive towards that completion with all that we are.

Proverbs 3:3-7  Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

Abiding in Christ!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Carl Heinrich von Bogatzky, "A Golden Treasury for the Children of God" 1718)

"Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine--so neither can you unless you abide in Me." John 15:4

To abide in Christ, who is our righteousness and strength--is the very life and power of Christianity. We are in this happy state, when . . .
our thoughts are going out after Him,
our hearts are cleaving to Him, and
our minds are staying upon Him.
To abide in Him brings peace and joy, and strength to overcome sin and the world--which believers renounce the more readily, as they have found something better in Christ.

Abiding in Him, believers . . .
  look to Christ for all,
go to Christ with all, and
  depend on Christ through all.
Thus they abide in Jesus--and Jesus abides in them.

May the Lord give me grace, likewise, immovably to abide in Him. Then I shall . . .
  conquer sin,
  overcome the world,
  and always triumph in Christ.

Psalm 119:1-3  ALEPH. Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.
Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.
They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.

From Our Pastor:

“How Is Man? How Abominable And Filthy Is Man”
“What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? (16.) How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?” Job 15:14

What is man, what is mankind truly like, and how goes God view mankind. When we ask these questions, we must be prepared for the truth of the scriptures. Well folks, here is the truth of the scriptures, mankind outside of Jesus Christ is totally rotten. They are totally worthless to God, and they do not serve Him, they do not know Him, and they constantly lie about Him. Job asked, “What is man, that he should be clean” and the answer is mankind is not clean, they are filthier than the worms in the ground. People have been fed a pack of lies all their life, from their mother, from their spouse, from their family and friends, from their churches, and from their Pastors. People are not good, how can they be, they are sinners against God. They are born sinners and will die sinners if God does not save their wicked souls. The churches and their Pastors have lied about the status of people for thousands of years. They want people to believe that there is good in everyone, that God loves everyone, and that if we can just cause people to see their errors in life then we can cause them to repent and choose to follow Christ. That is the biggest pack of lies ever to fall from the lips of pastors. God has nothing good to say about people, He never speaks of any good in them at all. The truth is that God calls mankind “abominable” that means they are -  morally detested – which means - dislike intensely – which means, God doesn’t think anything good about mankind. People can put mankind on a moral pedestal if they want too, but God condemns them for the sinners they are. God never speaks well of mankind, He never credits them with any good, and point blank says that the only good in mankind is Jesus Christ. Saul of Tarsus was a very rotten man but was only good after he was saved by Jesus Christ, and the only good Paul ever done was what he did for God, through the workings of the Holy Spirit. We cannot speak of the good of man because God said “…There is none righteous, no, not one” Romans 3:10. That is not some people, that is all people. People says that “God loves everyone” If God does love everyone then why isn’t every person saved? Oh, and it’s not about their choice, “There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.” Romans 3:11 If the Holy Spirit does not prick a sinner’s heart and cause them to repent, then they will never ever change, no matter what. Look around you, see the world of people around you, what do you see, EVIL. Peoples hearts are full of hate, they hate for the sake of hating. People are evil in every thought, they never do good nor do they want to do good. God is mad at people, why do you think we have so many bad things that happen to us, diseases, hurricanes, tornadoes, shootings, and other disasters? God punishes evil in this world, He punishes evil because a righteous God must punish evil. God destroyed this entire earth population with a flood because it was evil, what make you believe He is not judging this world with all other happenings today? But people want to believe it is “global warming”, or it is just evil people, or other things causes these things to happen, but God, a loving God would never do or even allow such things to happen. Well, with that kind of thinking, you don’t know God. God is Sovereign, and He controls EVERYTHING! If you study Revelations, you will find that God is not as sympathetic toward people as you might think. He is going to slowly afflict much more pain and misery on the population of this world than it has ever seen. Why, because people are evil, and they deserve every ounce of fury that God can inflict on them. Just as He did in the flood, He will eventually destroy the entire population of the earth. “And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.” Revelation 20:9 that is the remaining population of the earth, all those good people you keep hearing about. Folks, the truth is mankind are filthy, they are an abomination to God. The truth is, God does not love everyone and if you are not saved by Jesus Christ then you are not loved of God either. You are a sinner against God, and He will destroy you unless you flee to Jesus Christ for salvation. Think about it, who did God destroy in the flood, all but eight souls, who will He destroy in this world today, all but those who are saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. People are evil no matter what you believe, “…let God be true, but every man a liar…” Romans 3:4 Listen closely to this scripture, “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:18

Souls are perishing — and ministers are amusing them!
By: Archibald Brown

"But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them — that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood! When I say to the wicked, 'O wicked man, you will surely die!' and you do not speak out to dissuade him from his ways — that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood!" Ezekiel 33:6-8
We behold this same evil affecting many of the pulpits of today's churches. Mere morality is taking the place of regeneration, and the atonement by blood is a slighted subject. Instead of beseeching men to be reconciled to God — we find ministers wasting their time in giving Sunday lectures about all kinds of subjects. Rome is burning — and Nero is playing his fiddle! Souls are perishing — and ministers are amusing them!

If My people:
By Daniel Webster, 1772-1852

If we and our posterity reject religious instruction and authority, violate the rules of eternal justice, trifle with the injunctions of morality, and recklessly destroy the political constitution which holds us together — no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us, that shall bury all our glory in profound obscurity!
"If My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways — then I will hear from Heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
2 Chronicles 7:14

The temptation, and the opportunity

   ~  ~  ~  ~

The following in an excerpt from the autobiography of James Smith:

I have just heard that an old friend, far advanced in life, has fallen into sin! May the Lord pardon and restore him.

In looking back, I wonder that I have not publicly fallen; for I have been powerfully tempted to other sins, equally as bad. I have regularly observed, that in my experience the Lord has not often allowed the temptation, and the opportunity--to meet! And when they have, fear has worked powerfully and kept me back.

"But as for me--my feet were almost gone! My steps had well near slipped!" Psalm 73:2

Ah, how frequently have I been almost gone! I can call to mind places and times, when I have been in the very mouth of danger, on the brink of a fearful fall--and yet the Lord has held me up! But for special keeping--where would I have been this morning? And what would I be? Blessed be God, though it was almost--it was not fully. This word, almost, has been sweet to my soul.

Almost Gone!--but altogether saved, through God's most free, and all-glorious grace!

But I would not merely be kept from open sin, I desire to be so deeply sanctified, that my soul may . . .
hate, abhor, and detest sin in every form,
  tremble at its approach, and
flee from the very appearance of evil--to Jesus!

I find that my nature is still corrupt, depraved, and polluted; and that . . .
  the blood of Jesus,
the restraining power of the Holy Spirit,
and the forgiving grace of God
--are as necessary as ever!

"Hold me up--and I shall be safe!" Psalm 119:117

Blessed [are] they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. (Matthew 5:6)

Try as we might, there is no human satisfaction to be found in earthly things. No created thing can hope to fill us, to complete us. For all created things are finite in their very nature. Yet our longing for satisfaction is infinite and therefore can only be filled by One infinite in nature. The righteous are those who are filled by the Spirit of God—they are, therefore, satisfied.

The best man!

  ~  ~  ~  ~

(Charles Spurgeon)

It seems to me that the best and most tender duty that Christians do for their Lord Jesus, is that which is touched with the bloodmark--which bears the stamp of the cross.

The best preaching is, "We preach Christ crucified!"

The best living is, "We are crucified with Christ!"

The best man, is a crucified man!

The more we live beholding our Lord's unutterable griefs, and understanding how He has fully put away our sin--the more holiness we shall produce.

The more we dwell where the cries of Calvary can be heard--where we can view Heaven, and earth, and Hell, all moved by His wondrous suffering--the nobler will our lives become.

Nothing puts life into men, like a dying Savior!

Come, let us slay sin--for Christ was slain.

Come, let us bury all our pride--for Christ was buried.

Come, let us rise to newness of life--for Christ has risen.

Let us be united with our crucified Lord in His one great objective. Let us live and die with Him--and then every action of our lives will be very beautiful.

For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks. (Psalm 18:27)

Humble are the people of God and they will be saved! Humble are they that trust upon Christ for they have given up hope in their own worth, power, and strength to sustain themselves. All will be saved who reject themselves and trust upon the life, death, resurrection, ascension, and deity of Christ Jesus. They shall taste the life everlasting!

Mark 4:39-40  And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

The blessed man!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(James Smith, "Comfort for Christians!")

"Blessed is the man You chasten, O Lord--the man You teach from Your law!" Psalm 94:12

The chastenings of the Lord often appear severe--but they are merciful. They . . .
  correct our follies,
  subdue our proud wills, and
soften and humble our hard hearts before Him.

When God chastens--He teaches. The lessons are found in His Word--but we never learn many of them, until we go through the furnace of affliction! We often learn more truth from one short, sharp affliction--than we do from many books and sermons!

In affliction, God teaches us . . .
  our own emptiness and vanity,
  our dependence on Himself, and
the insufficiency of all our earthly things!

In affliction, God . . .
  endears the Lord Jesus and His great salvation to us;
  shows us the value of the provision of grace;
  makes our consciences tender and honest;
qualifies us for usefulness on earth; and
fits us for the enjoyment of Himself in Heaven.

We need chastening. If we do not receive it--we become . . .
  carnal and worldly,
  light and trifling,
unsavory and useless in both the world and the church!

It is a blessed thing to be chastened of the Lord, especially when the rod teaches us such important and invaluable lessons! Chastened Christians are generally the most useful and attractive Christians.

"Heed the rod--and the One who appointed it!" Micah 6:9
Chastened Christian! Seek grace . . .
  to bear the rod,
  to bless the rod, and
to kiss the hand that holds the rod!

"Blessed is the man whom God corrects--so do not despise the chastening of the Almighty!" Job 5:17

How beautiful! How simple! Amazingly, God pours forth all His mercy, love and great blessings to those who call upon His majestic name. People never reject the Bible because they cannot understand it

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(J.C. Ryle, "Thoughts For Young Men")

"This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed!" John 3:19-20

Be very sure of this--people never reject the Bible because they cannot understand it.

They understand it only too well! They understand that it condemns their own behavior. They understand that it witnesses against their own sins, and summons them to judgment! They try to believe it is false and useless--because they don't like to believe it is true.

An evil lifestyle must always raise an objection to this holy book.

Men question the truth of Christianity--because they hate the practice of it!

"For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie, and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness." 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12

He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; (Psalm 104:14)

The Lord is ever our provider! Never shall our souls stand in need of any necessity. When God's child lacks strength in time of trouble, the Lord shall supply it. Psalm 119:114-117  Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.
Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.
Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.
Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.

This is just the difference between the Christian and the worldling

(Charles Spurgeon)

" And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD." Job 1:21

" It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes." Psalm 119:71

This is just the difference between the Christian and the worldling:
The worldling blesses God while He gives him plenty,
but the Christian blesses Him when He smites him!

He believes God to be too wise to err--and too good to be unkind.

He trusts God's heart--where he cannot trace God's hand.

He looks up to Him in the darkest hour--and believes that all is well.

" And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

Daily Promises

Blue Letter Bible
March 22, 2018

By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as [in] a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker [is] God. Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, [so many] as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of [them], and embraced [them], and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that [country] from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better [country], that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. (Hebrews 11:8-16)

God here promises not only His pleasure in those who look to the heavenlies rather than toward earthly treasure, but He also promises a holy and heavenly dwelling to His people. For all believers say the same: that they seek not a homeland with foundations of stone and metal, but one made of heavenly hands.

Psalm 27:12-14  Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.

Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

It is the vile monster!

    ~  ~  ~  ~

(Henry Law, "Family Prayers")

God Almighty, holy Father,
We beseech You to deepen in our hearts--the abhorrence of all evil.

May we hate sin with perfect hatred. It is the vile monster which . . .
  defies Your power,
  casts off Your yoke,
  treads down Your lovely law,
  defiles our nature,
  spreads misery throughout this earth,
brought death into the world, and
nailed the spotless Lamb of God to the accursed tree!

Teach us to look to Jesus on the cross--and so to estimate our sin's loathsome guilt in Your sight.

There could be no pardon of our sin--but through Your dear Son's death!

No cleansing could wash out our sin's filth--but Jesus' precious blood!

No atonement could expiate the evil of our sin--but the shame, the agony, the bruises of the incarnate God!

We see the boundless price--may we read therein our boundless guilt!

In the infinite payment--show us our infinite debt!

Thus may we . . .
discern the deadly viper in its real malignity,
and tear it with holy indignation from our hearts,
and resolutely turn from its every snare,
and refuse to hold polluting dalliance with it!
"Oh! What a wretched man I am!" Romans 7:24

Those who abide in the love of Christ are assured his kindness. He cares for His children, the sheep of His hand. Never shall those whom He grants drink of the living water grow faint. So trust in the Lord. Lean upon His abounding grace. Abide in the life of His vine and you shall never feel the severity of God's hand!

The Bible!

  ~  ~  ~  ~

(Henry Law, "Beacons of the Bible" 1869)

The Bible is the richest treasure of the world!

Without it, the palace is a dark blank.
With it, the poor cottage sparkles with celestial light.

It is the transcript of God's heart.

It tells what human reason is too weak to find.

It is pure truth without one shadow of error.

It gives knowledge on all things needful for time and for eternity.

It is a safe guide through life's entangled path.

It is a compass . . .
  through shoals and rocks;
  amid winds and waves;
  to Heaven's eternal rest!

The sage is ignorant without it.

The peasant learns from it salvation's road.

It is a solace for every hour.

It is a companion always ready to converse.

It cheers when other comforts fail.

It is arrayed in every charm for the intellect.

It never wearies.

It is always fresh.

Its oldest truths cannot grow old.

Its readers become more wise--and more holy.

Other books may puzzle and corrupt.
The Bible is from Heaven, and leads to Heaven.
It enters the heart with purifying grace.

The more you search the Bible--the more your minds will wonder, and your hearts will love.

Read it as literally true. Then no human philosophy will beguile you.

Ponder its characters. You will find on them the intrinsic stamp of truth.

"The Bible is . . .
  an armory of heavenly weapons,
  a pharmacy of infallible medicines,
  a mine of exhaustless wealth,
  a guidebook for every road,
  a chart for every sea,
  a medicine for every malady,
and a balm for every wound!
Rob us of our Bible, and our sky has lost its sun!" (Thomas Guthrie)

"Oh, how I love Your Law! I meditate on it all day long!" Psalm 119:97

"Your Words were found, and I ate them--and Your Word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart!" Jeremiah 15:16

Colossians 3:1-2  If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

The sum of my complaints amounts to this!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Letters of John Newton)

"Oh, what a wretched man I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?" Romans 7:24

I see much daily cause for humiliation--whether I look backward or inward. The sum of my complaints amounts to this--that I am a sick sinner, diseased in every part. I am burdened with a body of sin and death.

But I have a little book, which I am enabled to believe is the sure Word of God. The doctrines and promises I meet with in it, which we call the gospel, exactly suit my needs--and the temper and conduct it is designed to form, agrees with my leading desires.

I was once far otherwise minded, and would doubtless have remained so--had not almighty power and sovereign mercy softened my heart. I would therefore praise Him for what he has done, and wait upon Him to do more, for I can do nothing for myself. In the mean time, instead of complaining--I would try to be thankful.

If He has begun a good work, I dare not indulge a doubt of His carrying it on to completion. If He who is the infallible Physician has undertaken my case--I shall not die but live, and declare the works of the Lord!

Colossians 3:12-15  Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

We must trace His bloody footsteps!

(Letters of John Newton)

"Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows." John 16:33

"To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you--leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps." 1 Peter 2:21

The Christian life is a warfare--and you must not expect an exemption from the battle.

The Captain of our salvation trod a thorny path Himself--and we must trace His bloody footsteps, and not think to walk to Heaven upon a soft carpet. If we could--then what need would we have of shoes of iron and brass?

Those who are now reaping in joy--sowed in tears when they were here. And why should not we? The way to Heaven is through many trials and sorrows. If we did not meet with such things--we might justly suspect that we had mistaken the road!

"For the Lord disciplines the one He loves--and chastises every son whom He receives." Hebrews 12:6

For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward [man] is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding [and] eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen [are] temporal; but the things which are not seen [are] eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)

Our struggles, our battles, our daily toiling against the forces of this present darkness are naught compared with the marvellous riches and captivating glory to which we are called and in which we will soon partake. What matter our suffering? What matter our failures? What matter any measure of suffering when held against the surpassing beauty and permanence of our heavenly hope!

Revelation 1:5-6  And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord's people, instead of amusing themselves with politics

  ~  ~  ~  ~

(Letters of John Newton)

The times are gloomy--but the Lord reigns! To Him I would refer everything in public or in private life. There is political discontent in some hearts, and in some places. But I ought to be discontented with myself--that I am not filled with wonder and praise, that things are so much better with us than we deserve!

The Lord's people, instead of amusing themselves with politics, may be stirred up to serve their country by prayer. If they sigh and mourn for the abominations in the midst of us, and stand in the breach to avert deserved judgments--then our peace and liberty may be yet prolonged. I rely more upon the prayers of God's people, than upon all our fleets and armies!

It is well both for ministers and private Christians to have as little to do with politics as possible. Politics is a pit that will swallow up the life and spirit, if not the very form of the religion of many professors. The Lord reigns, and every issue will be directed by infinite wisdom and goodness, without our interference. And can we wish them under better management?

From poison and politics--good Lord deliver me! A heart swallowed up in politics is as hurtful to the life of God in the soul--as poison is to the bodily frame!

" And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. " Revelation 19:6

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)

My prayer: Heavenly Father, I am so grateful for Your abundant love and grace. The strong hold You have on my life is incomprehensible! Thank You for the promise that nothing can separate me from Your love. If I was qualified to search out the best Christian in the kingdom

  ~  ~  ~  ~

(Letters of John Newton)

"This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at My Word." Isaiah 66:2

Indeed, I believe that the most lively graces, and the most solid comfort--are known among the Lord's poor and unlearned people. Every outward advantage has a tendency to nourish the pride of the human heart--and requires a proportionate knowledge of the deceitful self and the evil of sin to counter-balance them.

It is no less difficult to have great abilities, than great riches--without trusting in them. 1 Timothy 6:17

If I was qualified to search out the best Christian in the kingdom--I would not expect to find him either in a seminary or in a pulpit. I would give the palm to that person who had the lowest thoughts of himself, and the most admiring and loving thoughts of the Savior. And perhaps this person would be some bed-ridden old man or woman--or a pauper in a parish workhouse.

The Lord's regard to us, is not to be measured by our theological knowledge--but rather by the simplicity of our dependence, and the uniform tenor of our obedience to His will.

"Humble yourselves before the Lord--and He will lift you up." James 4:10

Poor little boy!

~  ~  ~  ~

(Letters of John Newton)

My Dear Sir,
Poor little boy! It is mercy indeed that he recovered from such a formidable injury. The Lord wounded--and the Lord healed.

I ascribe, what the world calls accident--to Him. I believe that without His permission, and for wise and good ends--a child can no more pull a bowl of boiling water on itself, than it could pull the moon out of its orbit!

And why does He permit such things? One or two reasons is sufficient for us. God allows trials to remind us of the uncertainty of life and all creature-comforts; to make us afraid of cleaving too closely to pretty toys, which are so precarious, that often while we look at them they vanish; and to lead us to a more entire dependence upon Himself--that we might never judge ourselves or our concerns safe from outward appearances only; but that the Lord is our keeper, and were not His eye upon us, a thousand dangers and painful changes, which we can neither foresee nor prevent, are lurking about us at every step, ready to break in upon us every hour.

" For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.  Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake. (1 John 2:12)

Due the majestic name of Christ, we have admittance to the glorious throne of God. For those who believe, we have been called His children and brought out of this evil world to a new life in Jesus Christ. His greatness leaves us speechless as we observe His mighty hand over all things, both on earth and in heaven. It is because of the powerful name of Christ we stand in awe of His glorious splendor.

A chequered life

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Letters of John Newton)

This life that we live in the flesh, is a chequered life.

The grain requires both rain and sunshine to bring it to maturity; but either of them without the other, would destroy the crop.

Thus, if we had only the sun of prosperity--the plant of grace would be burnt up.
If we only had the rain of affliction--the plant of grace would be overwhelmed and drowned.

The Lord, who knows exactly what we are, and where we are--adjusts these different means, in season and measure, as He, in His wisdom, sees most for our advantage.

Were health at all times and in all respects best for those who fear Him--then they would not feel a moment's illness!

We pass through so many changes, that when it rains--we may always hope for fair weather.
And when the sky is bright and serene--we may expect rain before long.

He prescribes all our afflictions--in number, weight, and measure, and season, exactly according to what our case requires!

What a mercy to know that all our concerns are in the hands of Him who so loved us, as to wash us from our sins in His own blood.

If my pocket was full of stones!

   ~  ~  ~  ~

(Letters of John Newton)

"Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do You say?" John 8:4-5

If my pocket was full of stones, I have no right to throw one at the greatest sinner upon earth. I have either done as bad, or worse than he--or I certainly would have done so, if the Lord had left me to myself--for I am made of just the same materials. If there is any difference between myself and the greatest wretch--it is wholly of sovereign grace!

"But by the grace of God I am what I am!" 1 Corinthians 15:10

From Our Pastor: This week I inserted an article from our former Pastor Elder O. B. Mink - Now In Glory

The Lord’s Preacher

The Lord’s preachers are human (believe it or not) just as much as any of us. They come from all areas and levels of society, but mostly from homes poor in material wealth. They come in all sizes - tall, short, fat, skinny, and in between. But they are all of the male sex.
Most people do not care whether they exist or not; that is, until they get in trouble. Then they ask, “Where is that preacher, what’s his name?” Then the first question they ask the preacher is, “Why in the world did God let this happen to me?”
But, in fact, God’s preachers are not hard to find, for they are constantly being told by a great many people, “You get in my hair, preacher”, or, “You get under my skin”, and that is about as close as you can get to a person.
The Lord’s preachers are required to have the wisdom of Solomon; the disposition of a lamb; the swiftness of an eagle. But when he makes a mistake, he is called an ignoramus. If he unapologetically preaches the truth of God’s word, he is accused of being hard-hearted, or inconsiderate. And if he is not promptly at the scene of every church related emergency, some of the members will say, “He is lazy”.
In the eyes of a great many people, the Lord’s preacher is a bogey-man who spends most of his time talking about the place “down there”.
While the great majority of secular employees get paid vacations, holidays, and a host of other job benefits, and rightly so, the Lord’s preacher is on call twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year, and his job benefits, other than the meager salary, are few or none. He has no pastor, nor labor union to take his grievance to.
Each church member knows, or should know that God’s preacher has but one mission in life, and that is to reprove sin, first in himself, and then in whomsoever it is seen. He is considered a dedicated man, but, he should keep quiet about the “little sins”, “immodest dress”, or “colored jesting”, and, oh yes, why does he criticize other churches?
If God’s preacher drives a big car, he is materially minded. If he drives a little car, he is not concerned in bringing people to church. He is expected to be the first and the last person at the church building, no matter what kind of car he drives.

He must be at all times ready to meet the public, and represent the church. If his old faithful suit begins to show wear from the many drops of pulpit sweat, he is undignified. Yet, some members keep telling him, “Don’t you forget, we are giving you your living”.
No matter how sour the grapes, he must ever be an extrovert, which is sometimes most difficult. But, faith in God has made an unceasing optimist of him and he knows the rain which comes into his life falls from the cloud of God’s merciful and beneficent providence which abides upon him.
Soldiers get medals for bravery. Industry gives promotions and certificates of merit for jobs well done. Lodges bestow accolades upon their worthies. The entertainment world has their outstanding artists whom they award with trophies. But none can compare with the reward that the Lord’s preacher will receive when he faces his God and hears Him say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant”.
The Lord’s preacher knows that in order to become President of the United States, he would have to take a big demotion. The Lord’s preacher may, in old age retire from the pastorate, but he will never cease to preach, for there is no discharge from that high and lofty calling.

“This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.” (I Timothy 3:1)

No matter the heartaches connected with a God given ministry, there is no better, or a more soul edifying work.

Unless our study of Scripture . . .
By: Arthur Pink

"He who says he abides in Him, ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked." 1 John 2:6

Unless our study of Scripture is conforming us, both inwardly and outwardly, to the image of Christ — it profits us not!
"Leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps." 1 Peter 2:21

Never nurse a child for the devil:
By William S. Plumer

The heart of your child is corrupt, and all your teaching and example will be lost without God's blessing. You cannot change the heart, renew the will, or wash away the sins of your child. God alone can impart to him a love of the truth, or give him repentance. You may use your best endeavors—but all will be in vain without God's Spirit.

A mother of eleven pious children, who being asked how she came to be so much blessed, said, "I never took one of them into my arms to give it nourishment, that I did not pray that I might never nurse a child for the devil."

Proverbs 16:18
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”

Pride is an awful thing. It can destroy families, friends, marriages, and all sorts of relationships. Most times all involved are guilty. No one is totally innocent.
But what about when it comes to God's people?
What about when two individuals or two groups who disagree on doctrine? Even when we are undoubtedly in the right our pride can take over and put us in the wrong. Are we humble enough to let a brother or sister know what God says in His Word without bragging of the knowledge He has given us? The same knowledge they may not have obtained yet?
Now, don't misunderstand here. There are times when, according to God's Word we must not fellowship with some. There will be those false teachers and false prophets that come along that we should flee. Those preaching the doctrines of devils and preaching another gospel. But then there are those, who like us, are willing to humble themselves and seek the Lord's guidance in our disagreements. When both parties can throw their pride out the window and set and peaceably talk about their differences and come away in peace. Even if the matter is unresolved. Or if we can throw our differences aside and enjoy sweet fellowship with the things we do agree upon.
Pride has split many a church and caused many a church to not fellowship with other churches. Pastors and members fail to fellowship because of pride from one or all involved. Pastors refuse fellowship from other pastors because they so pridefully think they are more holy than another or that they have more knowledge than others. We must remember who that holiness and that knowledge came from. Maybe the Lord will use you to teach that one a great blessing and at the same time increasing their knowledge of God's Word.
John tells us in 1 John 4:1 “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” It is true, we must choose our fellowship wisely. Sometimes there will be just too many differences. Sometimes it may even be someone we are closest to that we must flee. And then there comes that time when the one we least expect is the one we can have the sweetest of all fellowships.
We must be careful not to make our circle of fellowship so close that we cut off our own toes.
Praise the Lord when He sends those you can fellowship with. But also praise Him when He shows you those to stay away from. Try the spirits. If they are to far removed from the truth then flee. But if they be of a kindred spirit then cherish the fellowship and praise the Lord for it.
O child of God, do not let pride run your life. Do not let pride rule your life. Do not let pride ruin your life. If you are struggling with pride toward a brother or sister in Christ, humbly submit to the Lord and forgive whatever wrong you think has been done. Follow our Lord's example and show mercy and grace to those whom we should be having sweet fellowship with.
As our text verse says “Pride goeth before destruction”. Before your pride brings you to ruin, beg our Lord for forgiveness. Beg Him to remove this most hideous sin from you. Ask our Lord to show you how to approach the one you have been prideful against and go to them asking forgiveness. It would do us all some good to humble ourselves before our Lord and our brethren when we have so foolishly let our pride show it's ugly face.

Praise ye the Lord!!!
