Titus - 3

A Study Of The Book Of Titus.

Lesson 3 Chapter 1:3 - 5

By Pastor Randy Johnson

  1. Verse 3 “But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;”
    1. Let us remember that the first sentence in this chapter goes from verse 1 – 4 so we are still in the same thought.

a. Paul was a servant of God and an Apostle of Jesus Christ “according to the faith of God's elect” that is by the choosing of God. V. 1

b. “and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness” this includes Paul’s salvation which not only comes by Gods election but also by his acknowledging of the truth which is in Christ Jesus. “which is after godliness” which is after the gospel message.

c. “In hope of eternal life” it is this faith that brought him hope in Christ Jesus.

d. “which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;” God promised the Son of God before the world began to both save Paul and make him an Apostle.

    1. “But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching…” v 2

a. Paul’s salvation came in time or the time that God hath appointed it, just as it was for all Christians.

b. God does everything by appointment and manifest or make it known in His own time.

c. Acts 17:26 “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;”

d. Galatians 4:4 “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,”

e. Everything is done by the blessed will of God.

    1. “which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;”

a. His salvation and Apostleship were both elected and manifested by God as God elected. Acts 9:15 “But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:”

b. Paul did not seek this missionary apostleship; rather, it was given to him by God's command.

c. We did not choose salvation or anything else for God; He chose it all just as He did with Paul.

d. 1 Thessalonians 2:4 “But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.”

e. 2 Timothy 1:11 “Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.”

  1. Verse 4 “To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.”
    1. “To Titus” a Greek with no Jewish blood which Paul continues in verse 5 “For this cause left I thee in Crete”
    2. “mine own son after the common faith” which is another reason he left him in Crete.
    3. By the grace of God and Jesus Christ. Luke 2:11 “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” – or with their blessing because it was Their will.
  2. Verse 5 “For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:”
    1. He left Titus in Crete for several reasons. God chose it, Jesus Christ willed it, Paul trusted him, Titus had enough knowledge to correct the error in the churches, and he was a Greek.
    2. “that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting”

a. The word wanting means lacking therefore it would be Titus job to deliver those things.

b. Preachers deliver the correct teachings for the churches. Ecclesiastes 12:9 “And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.”

c. God has a purpose for all things and a reason for ever preacher.
