Titus-14

A Study Of The Book Of Titus.

Lesson 14 Chapter 3:6 – 8

By Pastor Randy Johnson

  1. Verses 4 - 6 "But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, (5.) Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; (6.) Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;"
    1. We added verses 4 – 5 to get the true impact of verse 6.
    2. “Which he shed on us abundantly…” – This means - Which he poured out on us – not just drops or even in buckets but “abundantly” which means – richly- This is so wonderful; this heavenly gift of “kindness, love, mercy, and renewing of the Holy Spirit was sent from heaven and pacifically from our Heavenly Father not in small amounts but rich amounts of it.
    3. The same thought is used twice in Acts 2:17 - 18 "And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: (18.) And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:"
    4. Zechariah 12:7 - 10 "The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah. (8.) In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them. (9.) And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. (10.) And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn."
    5. “through Jesus Christ our Saviour;" – this is the only way we get anything from God, even our prayers must be through His Beloved name. John 14:12 - 14 "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. (13.) And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. (14.) If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it."
  2. Verse 7 “That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
    1. “That being justified by his grace…” Anyone who does not believe is a God given salvation is not saved. Romans 3:24 “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:” Salvation is the same as all other gifts from God; they are all by grace.
    2. If you want to know what grace is, just read Romans 5:6 “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.”
    3. Let us never forget what we were; verse 3 “For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.” And what we are as Christians and that will tell us all we need to know about grace.
    4. “…we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” – Not heirs of eternal life that is a gift of God; but because of this gift we become heirs of God and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ Romans 8:16 - 17 "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: (17.) And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together."
    5. Galatians 4:6 “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”
  1. Verse 8 “This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.”
    1. “This is a faithful saying…” or this is the true doctrine; the doctrine that cannot fail. Teaching Gods word; even if we are hated and rejected because of it is “profitable” to God; to mankind; and to us who preach it. Sinners must hear the gospel to be saved and they must hear it in truth or it is worthless to them.

a. 1 Timothy 1:15 “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.”

b. Sovereign Grace is a faithful saying and here it is proven out thus far in this chapter. A rejection of a Sovereign God is a rejection of truth.

    1. “…I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works…”

a. Beloved a maintenance of good works is a MUST it is not optional on the believers part. A weak Christian is one whom has weak works.

b. This is to be a constant area of our preaching; it is not that we are pushy but rather it is our constant reminder that God commanded that we do. Titus 3:1 “Put them in mind…to be ready to every good work,”

c. Job asked this question in Job 35:7 "If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand?"

d. Paul said of Philemon's slave Onesimus; Philemon 1:10 - 11 "I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: (11.) Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:" – we also can and must ask ourselves if before grace and salvation came all our works were worthless to God then now that grace and salvation has come what are we doing for God and the cause of salvation.

    1. Maintaining good works is a must because it is these good works that separates the Christian from the lost world.
