Romans 8:38-39

A Study of The Book of Romans

Lesson 59 Chapter 8:38 – 39

By Pastor Randy Johnson

  1. Getting to this point.
    1. We must continue to focus on Christ’s promise to us in verse 28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

a. Two central thoughts here (1.) That no matter what life brings to us; it is for our good. And (2.) We are the called according to His purpose and therefore He will not put more on us than we can stand.

b. This is another promise every Christian needs to keep in mind, because it allows us the ability to suffer for the Lord’s sake. 2 Corinthians 4:16 - 18 “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. (17.) For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; (18.) While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

    1. Romans 8:31 “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?”
    2. Therefore the Lord gave us several things that may and most likely will come our way and none of them should separate our love from Him for allowing these things in our life.

a. Verse 35 “…shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” Anywhere from trouble to death; we shall praise God for them all because the gift He has given us in Christ Jesus is worth suffering all of these for.

b. But the Lord said in verse 37 “…we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” Conquerors means - gain a decisive victory – In Him! In all these things.

  1. Verse 38 – 39 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, (39.) Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
    1. This is another promise from the Lord, and that promise is nothing in existence or ever will exist will be able to undo the glorious gift that God has given to us in Christ Jesus.
    2. This implies a deep and settled frame of mind. He does not believe there is a slimiest possibility of it.
    3. “…that neither death…” the ultimate sacrifice or payment or penalty in life is death. 1 Corinthians 15:54, 55 “So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. (55.) O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”
    4. “…nor life…” Why does death precede life? Because this is our love for life here on this earth. To many people love life, the Christian should love being with Jesus.
    5. “…nor angels…” this would be demon angels because Gods angels would never attempt to separate us from the love of Christ. Please do not ever thing there are no demon angels because they are.
    6. “…nor principalities…” This would normally refer to civil rulers however I believe here it refers to evil ruler’s live evil spirits or still maybe evil angels also.
    7. “…nor powers…” this is the powers of evil or of Satan and his high ranking angels. Ephesians 6:12 “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
    8. “…nor things present, nor things to come…” That is anything of today or tomorrow, even those things that may be falling into place as we approach the tribulation period as in political burdens.
    9. “…Nor height, nor depth…” This would be anything above us or anything below us where Satan dwells in both right now, be not afraid he cannot separate us from Gods love and His gift of salvation. Beloved this is all we will carry with us from this world.
    10. “…nor any other creature…” This would be any created thing at all.
    11. “…shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Salvation is Gods gift to us; it is the only thing we will take with us. The love of God is eternal toward us and therefore we nor any other being take it away, even if we loose some love for God in doubt He will never loose it toward us.
    12. Jude 1:20 “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith…” or build upon your most holy faith. That is build up your faith in God through His word, it will keep you strong. Do not allow things of this world and problems weaken your faith, keep it strong no matter what happens.
